Apologies if there is already a thread on this. I did a search but didn’t find.
Need to go to Oz for a Wedding next January, I have loads of Avios and read the article on using partner airlines a couple of weeks ago.
I’m no expert at this and I’ve done some looking but can’t find any availability at all.
Please could someone advise the best way to plan a route to Oz using two non BA partners and avios. I am flexible with time and don’t mind a convoluted routing / overnight stop-overs.
TIA to anyone who can assist.
You need to search for Avios availability on each individual sector and then call up BA to book.
I mean, basically, it’s up to you. The list of oneworld airlines is on their website – decide where you’d like to go on the way there and back and then try to find availability to match. Take you pick – via Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Qatar etc.
When I did this last year (obviously it got cancelled). I found loads of availability with Cathay but mixed availability HKG-Oz. Within Oz availability for Qantas was excellent. In the end I ended up with LHR-HKG-PER outbound, some internal flights (PER-BNE and BNE-CNS) and SIN-HND-LHR on the way back. I had Singapore Airlines CNS-SIN, obviously not on the OneWorld redemption.
It was all pot luck on availability. SIN-HND-LHR wasn’t a first choice but it was JAL in First so I was rather happy with that.
No idea how many miles it was as it’s all lost in an FTV and other redemptions, cancellations, more FTVs and new redemptions.
January is quite a tough month for Aus as flights stay busy for quite a while with people taking long Xmas trips & then running up to CNY Aus-Asia can be quite busy. I’d also be wary of booking anything on Cathay as they seem destined to a slow death due to the HK COVID policies!
One option to explore is going “the other way” around, at least outbound, and trying to get something via the US. Then perhaps look for something on Qatar home – if you’re flexibile on date/departure point then I think you might have some luck there.
