Forums Other Destination advice New York hotel for a pre Christmas trip with a 4 year old

  • 30 posts

Hi, I would love to get some advice from the collective wisdom about New York hotels. Have just booked reward flights with Virgin from 15 – 20th December. I have been to New York plenty of times but not with a 4 year old and I’m a bit lost about the best option for hotels, there are two adults and my 4 year old daughter. I have Amex Platinum and the associated hotel statuses. Any tips gratefully received! Also any suggestions of places to visit. Thank you!

Hi Claire – do you have any idea of budget/where you’d like to stay? American hotels are very family friendly and there are loads of options where you can get a room or suite with enough beds for 3 of you.

For activities I’d say definitely the big toy shops (Toys R US, FAO Schwarz), you can have fun just looking around though of course it’s the perfect setting to get a few Christmas treats as well.

If your daughter is into dinosaurs etc the Natural History Museum is a must, you need to pre-book. I imagine there will be lots of seasonal stuff going on, possibly a fairground in Central Park? Tbh honest I think you’ll be spoiled for choice!

Thank you so much for the reply, I want to try and keep the hotel under £2k if I can, which I think will rule out suites unfortunately. The link is great, can’t wait to start booking things up. We’ve decided to try and keep it a secret which is already killing me 😂 as I am awful at keeping secrets

While not luxurious, as a family we’ve found the Residence Inn Times Sq to be great.
It is not, of course, in Times Sq.! But great Midtown location, v near Bryant Park for running off steam in.
Ok b/fast included, to start the little one’s day off, and that all-important kitchenette when
they don’t want to eat out 3 times a day!

Lol, we are going to Washington DC for the first few days of our Xmas road trip and I am much more excited about it than my teenager!

If you want to keep it under £400 pn I would personally go for a Hilton as you’ll get breakfast included as well (I know people say there are loads of breakfast places in NYC but it’s not cheap and I prefer to eat before we go out for the day). I’m a big fan of Homewood Suites with kids as you get plenty of room (even in NYC) and a kitchenette which can come in very handy. There’s a midtown/Times Square one which would be well placed for sightseeing etc.

If you’ve got HH points there will be some very good redemptions to be had at this time of year. We’re doing 15 nights in the Keys after DC entirely on points which would have cost us about £10k cash!

@MichaelC pipped me to it but totally agree on the kitchenette!

Brooklyn is better with kids, if you ask me. Even Downtown Brooklyn, rather than Times Sq area..

Is breakfast still free in US hiltons Anna? I thought I read something about them only providing food vouchers since the pandemic started?

@elguiri – it’s still free where it was anyway, e.g. Homewood Suites & Hampton Inn, but yes, you get a credit in other properties which varies between brands.

Thank you for all of the replies and suggestions, I am looking at them all, I also came across this and wondered if anyone has stayed there? Will be slightly over budget but will be a proper suite:

Maybe a bit late, just came to recommend
1 Hotel / Brooklyn bridge in Dumbo

I spent a lot of time in Dumbo when my kid was little. Dumbo is Very kid friendly. Take the ferry to Manhattan. Almost no cars — which is rare in nyc. A lot of places to eat, too.

I guess dumbo is the new Williamsburg

    @Anna
, thanks for clarifying. We like Homewood Suites, Home2 Suites, Garden Inn too. Always gave us plenty of space, sofabed in living room, kitchen/ette which is just what you need/want with kids. Done this in Philly, Miami, Tampa, DC before and always appreciated the space.
