Hi everyone,
I’m new to miles and points (in general, not just with VA – kicking myself for not learning about this sooner) and I realised in the last week or so that, due to multiple upcoming bookings in 2026 for a big birthday, I might be able to get gold status. Before I commit to the travel plans (and expense!) I was hoping people might be able to sense-check my understanding from reading this (and other) forums please.
1. Both my husband and I have seperate VA credit cards, so will get 2x vouchers a year. We’re in a household account. I think it should be possible to book 2x return trips in economy using points and then upgrade both return trips to UC (assuming availability) on the same booking (per this article: https://www.headforpoints.com/2025/04/27/using-virgin-atlantic-credit-card-vouchers/). Just wanted to check it definitely works for two travelling together, or does the head of household need to make two separate bookings (with one gifted voucher)?
2. I think the gold year starts (for renewal purposes) as soon as you reach gold, is that right? I think I should be able to retain silver, so just want to make sure I time the final 2026 qualifying flight correctly relative to my 2027 trips.
3. Some of the flights will need to be with partner airlines (Delta and KLM). How can I make sure I’ve purchased the correct fare bucket to get the right tier points? Do I need to sign up for a third party website, or call the customer centre (& pay the associated booking fee) direct?
Finally, if I have questions about how the different tiers work, is it possible to call the Flying Club centre and ask, or does it depend on the agent you get? Am I better off asking here? I’ve read variable things online, but the posts are a few years old. Not sure what the current situation is like.
Very grateful for any help you can provide!
