Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Newbie : Totally confused about Avios, Companion Vouchers and Taxes!

  • 3 posts

    Hi

Help and advice required please. I’m a confused newbie, here’s the basic details:

    1) Need to book a round trip flight from London to Orlando in peak season for 2 people
    2) Have a companion voucher to use
    3) Have about 30,000 Avios so far, but can buy more as needed

    Where I’m confused:

    a) I ‘think’ I need 60,000 points for a peak round trip flight LGW to Orlando, please correct me if wrong?
    b) Presumably this is enough for both of us, as we have a companion voucher?
    c) The Taxes. is this fixed + avios, or is it varied? I’ve seen things like 30,000 + £75 quoted, but then also things like ‘reward flight saver’ mentioned, which may not apply to a peak season flight

    Help please 🙂

    Best
    Mark

Check this list for the Avios needed for RFS redemptions which is generally what you would use if using a companion voucher.

To get a better feel for it, have a go at booking with a companion voucher for the route you’re interested in. Don’t need to go as far as completing the booking/ paying. Or try several different routes and see how the numbers move.

Are you comfortable that you know both the value of the Avios sitting in your account and the cost of acquiring more? Do yourself a spreadsheet or have a calculator to hand to check which of the various options is the better value.

Don’t do a straight Avios purchase! The sterling to Avios rate is way high. Subscribe, boost, acquire through sign up bonuses on cards etc etc

It may help you to make sense of the wealth of info on this site.

Thanks so much! Does this mean you now pay an inflated Avios points number (e.g. 70,000 round trip) and a reduced, fixed cost of Taxes ? (e.g. £75 each way) ?

You’ll get a lot more out of this hobby if you have a good read of the articles and threads on this site. But as suggested, do a dummy booking for your route and you will see the various payment options, starting at 30k avios plus £75 pp, one-way, off-peak (applies to the avios but not cash element). You then have several different options with different cash and avios amounts.

Your new that’s fine but please, there’s a plethora of info at your disposal. When I first looked at this site I read the articles for hours on end. Even having to read it out loud to myself via Uni NL mentioned above.

It’s not a hit and run. It’s a hobby. Read the articles and welcome.

@StanTheMan I don’t think it’s one. More would be if they said “what is an Avios?” 🙂

I hope a troll would be asking about something slightly more ambitious than scoring 2 economy seats to MCO!

Oh lolz and double posted because his first post would have got moderated. I did a beautiful answer to the other post too!

When I first took up this “hobby” there was no forum, so one was forced to read the articles for the answers! There were of course random questions in the comments of the daily articles. Then came the daily chat thread during the pandemic.

I first started 20 years ago there was barely the internet let alone forums like HFP. 😂

Incredible! Even recruiting people to help him cut out the barcodes for tax purposes.

Glad he was successful unlike the thousands in the hoover free flight fiasco.

@markomagic I used a different way of familiarising myself with the forum, than reading all of Robs university articles.

Provided you have the time, each day I read every post on the front page of the forum, and I read the 3 articles under the ‘HOME’ button along with the comments. Then when needed dipped into the appropriate university articles. a

Just a thought but it might work for you.

@zapoto I never got my free flight 🙁 also more importantly the washing machine was a bit rubbish, and had to be replaced after 4 years.

@zapato and @Misty. We did very well out of the Hoover tickets. Washing machine gave up the ghost. It was first day of Hoover tickets promotion so we were not aware it existed. Went off to buy a new machine and Hoover was all we could get delivered within a week so bought one. After a few years bought another washing machine and gave the machine to a friend. It lasted for over 20 years. Our Miele lasted for 7! OH insisted we go for NYC and not Florida. We gave up all hope of getting tickets. Eventually they offered us tickets on BA which we took and had a great trip to New York. I think if we had chosen Florida we’d still be waiting to fly!
