Has anyone ever been told you don’t have the option to upgrade your free BA card to the BAPP when calling? I’m worried I’ve pulled the upgrade £500 before I’ve hit the companion voucher target once too many times (3)?
The agent told me it’s likely to be a result of having the BAPP only 6 months ago and downgraded back to the free card (I’d had the BAPP for 14 months at that point).
I still have up to Sept 2022 to hit the spend target so I have time to sit and wait but just wondered if anyone else has been in this situation before and we’re you eventually able to upgrade?
Have you tried applying for the BAPP online? Does it redirect you to an upgrade page once you enter your details?
Tried applying for a new card online and there was no option to upgrade or enter details of existing card so I didn’t go through with it. On the chat I was told the only way to upgrade was over the phone.
This is becoming a common issue with Amex, so much so that I am tempted to believe that it is now policy since 1st September.
That said, most people impacted have managed to (eventually) find an agent who will process it.
I had the BAPP and had triggered the 2-4-1 so thought it time to downgrade last December. I was referred by my son from his Gold, signed up, no SUB obviously but he got his referral points and I then had the BA and the BAPP on my online account! Called up to cancel and the Agent was surprised at this but cancelled the BAPP. Surprisingly I was not given the line I would lose my 2-4-1, in fact the opposite, acknowledging I still had an Amex to pay the fees with.
Hope none of this attracts the AlexV treatment!
I’m being told by the agent that there is no option to upgrade my card on their system. If this is new policy then it’s abysmal from Amex. They need to be transparent with any new rules.
I do wonder if you go all the way with a new application what would happen? Never heard of anyone having both cards.

They aren’t new ‘rules’ – ie there is no ‘rule’ that says you can upgrade and downgrade at will, but they have tolerated it. Cardholders cannot seriously expect to have any sort of entitlement to do this and Amex can (and should for the benefit of the majority who pay the full fee) change their policy without notice.

Thanks for that. No entitlement expected, I’d just like to do something they actively tell you is possible. For what it’s worth, I’ve been a full fee, BAPP holder for many many years but struggled to justify the fee during covid times so took the decision to downgrade. So sorry if this agitates you as, I’m guessing, someone ‘who pays the full fee’.
Thanks to Amex who have tolerated me over the years too.
@ Ballymoney – your original comment was that they “need to be transparent with any new rules.” My point was that there are no rules so anyone doing it takes a risk each year. I actually genuinely feel sorry for you in the circumstances you describe, but justifying the higher fee and the serial upgrade/downgrade players and their endless reports/questions have made it more difficult for someone like you. It feels as though there is a general tightening of policy, but as Rob said earlier, you may yet fall on an agent to do it for you.
@JDB No worries, makes total sense. I’ll admit I probably did play the system a little too heavily in my younger years but for the last 5-6 years I’ve been a full time BAPP holder until late 2020.
Worse things happen at sea as they say.

suggests entirely possible and there is even a dedicated page for it
