Rob reviewed the Premier Inn in Scarborough in 2016. Rob says at the beginning of that review “Due to the dire quality of accommodation in the area, we always end up at the Premier Inn in Scarborough”.
Anyone know if the situation has improved at all since? I have have looked at a few reviews of various places that appear on Google Maps, anywhere on or near the Yorkshire Coast, and most of them still seam to be in line with Rob’s 2016 comments.
I would be very grateful indeed for any suggestions.
Thanks in advanceDoes it have to be the coast? Some nice options have been reviewed or commented inland but close-ish.
Does it have to be the coast?
Ideally, yes, or at least within a few miles of the coast, if possible.
We are already spending a few days inland, and as we now live pretty much near the centre of England, we miss the sea, which we could see from our previous home. There is a new luxury place opened near Whitby – Saltmoore. Not been yet.
Nothing else I can wholeheartedly recommend. The White Lodge in Filey is OK in a sea view room, but I am only there because my Mum is there and can’t imagine going otherwise. It’s also madly expensive although that actually suits me because you can always get in, even at peak periods at short notice.
Why not stay at “The Grand”?
You could prepare a review of the magnificent landmark property for Rob.

HAs HfP ever reviewed a Britannia property before?

Almost IN the grounds of Whitby Abbey.Scarborough is the Skegness of Yorkshire (although the castle is good). Brid and Filey are like its sickly children. No wonder you can’t find much. Go elsewhere. Whitby has some similar vibes but gets away with it by being oddball, interesting and gothic and having better fish and chips (the Quayside is just as good as the Magpie but with a shorter queue). Even more interesting on goth weekends (where the goths are all lovely).
Rent a cottage in the proper pedestrian fishing village bit of Robin Hoods Bay; the day tourists largely disappear at around 5.30 and it is very different and quite wonderful in the evening, although the chippy near the jetty closing was a blow.
The Endeavour in Staithes.
Fraisthorpe and Cayton are the best quieter beaches.
Or stay in Pickering (pick either colour of Swan Inn to stay at) and then get the NYMR or do the awesome moors drive over to Whitby.

I love Scarborough. It’s one of my favourite places in the world. I’m possibly blinded by the nostalgia of going on the chair lifts, getting told off for putting my head in the water on the water chute, and watching so many naval warfare shows in Peasholm park. Who can forget the open top bus in the rain?
I really can’t help with hotels, as I just drive for the day, but I know stickers mentioned one he stayed at last year or the one before that. I know there is a premier Inn at North Bay now that off top of my head is fairly new.
I”ve been to Whitby once, and it just wasn’t for me. Filey is too quiet (but nice). I’m not overly keen on Brid. I do think people see Scarborough like Brid, but I must have my rose tinted spectacles on, because I just do not see it.

Almost IN the grounds of Whitby Abbey.Been to both in my student days (late 1960s). Whitby was dire at the time. The warden appeared to run a shelter for stray cats; the place stank of overflowing litter trays and the smell when checking in and out was strong enough to make us retch.

Yes, I was coming to that conclusion myself.
We have been to Whitby a few times and Staithes too; once finding Whitby was overrun with goths, which was, as you say, interesting, in a good way.Spent a week in Bridlington at the age of 9 or thereabouts, but never been back.

I think that I would want to be paid handsomely, and in advance, for that job.

To bring it back round to where the thread started, actually a purple palace opened in Pickering a couple of years ago, although as it’s on the industrial estate heading out of town (think that site used to be a used car dealership?) and getting into town and the railway would involve a mile long march alongside an A road, it wouldn’t be my choice, even if it is new, probably good value, and safely purple and predictable 😀

I now recall staying somewhere north of Whitby for a pleasant around 15 years ago. It was quite new and I just happened to see a good write up in the paper. Cannot remember what it was called or where exactly, and I could not see anything on Google maps that triggered my memory.
It was back in the days when there was a helpful bug with the Hilton Visa, which meant that it awarded 3 points / £1 on all hotel stays, not just Hilton ones. Many thanks for all the thoughts and comments. Food for thought at least.
I have a real soft spot for Scaborough and having been going for over 50 year, every since my Grand Parents took me to stay at ‘Mrs Hunters’ when I was very young.
The Helania B&B is highly recommended, as is T’ol in the Wall pub, Leeds Fisheries and The Habour bar.
A walk from the North Bay roudabout to the Spa can be great in heavy seas.
Have a look at The Farrier at Cayton, a few miles from the coast between Scarborough and Filey.

Whitby was great, no cats in sight and a great location for both the Abbey (They gave out free tickets) and a walk into the town. Free parking at the door.

Free parking? What has the world come to??
[In those days cars were still banned.]
Jan 1971 would have been the first time that I arrived at a YH in a car – or rather a battered Mini van – at Dacre Banks, followed by Ramsgill, Kettlewell and Malham. I found myself doing a baggage run for those that were walking, as well as ferrying one of the walker’s sister, who had been persuaded to join the group in spite of having no interest in walking.
Funny how this forum triggers ancient memories.Have a look at The Farrier at Cayton, a few miles from the coast between Scarborough and Filey.
Will do so, thanks.

Sadly, already booked for when we are going.
But does look like one for the future…

I think this is the old Raithwaite Estate which had decent reviews, was a nice place so it’ll be interesting to call in when I’m passing.

I wholeheartedly agree, Scarborough is air miles ahead of any other east coast resort imho

🙂Its very interesting to put your nose round the door and use their facilities tho
We live just outside Scarborough. It’s a fantastic place to live but it’s true, it does need a really decent 4 or 5 star hotel. When looking to move here, we had a very pleasant stay at the Wrea Head Hotel in Scalby. It does have the best B&B in the World – Toulson Court!
