It’s slightly further up but I can recommend Saltburn (by-the-Sea). Very pretty little seaside town. I went there on a school trip back in the 80s, then finally returned with my family 40 yrs later during Covid.
Not sure what the hotel situation is though – we stayed in a Marriott Homes & Villas property (of which there were surprisingly many to choose from).

Have a poke around Bempton Cliffs and Sewerby too if you’re around that way. Great part of the world!

If you don’t need super posh, we recently stayed at The Bay Filey for mega cheap (I’m talking less than £200 for 3 nights midweek) in a nice self catered apartment.

The “resort” itself felt like a new/build English village with on-site pub (Wetherspoons quality) and shop + indoor pool but overall we were very impressed by the standard for what we paid. Direct beach access (beautiful miles long sandy beach) and a 15 minute drive to RSPB Bempton or 20 minutes up the road to Scarborough.

    Bempton is amazing.

We stayed at The Bay when our daughter was 2-ish (she’s now doing A-Levels). This was the first wave when the houses were effectively too small, in our view. From what I’ve seen on later visits – have occasionally walked down there, had a meal, walked back – later waves had more space.

If caravan’s aren’t for you and you want the flexibility of a house then it’s worth a look, especially if you’ll use the pool.

It is built on part of the old Butlins site, the other part being absorbed into the Primrose Valley caravan park next door.

Bempton is amazing, and I would say it is best seen at sea level from the Yorkshire Belle, a 78 year old pleasure boat that sails from Bridlington in the Summer months. Apart from the sea birds (and what you will see is seasonal – puffins are usually there from April to early August), you get close up to an interesting geological feature where the strata in the cliffs deviate and bend down into the sea.

We live just outside Scarborough. It’s a fantastic place to live but it’s true, it does need a really decent 4 or 5 star hotel. When looking to move here, we had a very pleasant stay at the Wrea Head Hotel in Scalby. It does have the best B&B in the World – Toulson Court!

I’ve been binge watching series 2 & 3 of ” bargain loving Brits by the sea ” on C5, in a so bad it’s good sort of way.
Blackpool, Skegvegas and Scarborough are featured, the latter looks the best of the bunch for sure, and the best B and B in the world features on a couple of episodes….
