Forums Other Destination advice Northern Italy city/town

  • 277 posts

In June we’re going to the Italian lakes and adding a stop in the dolomites but would like to make a 2 night stop in a town/city. Don’t want to travel too far south. Flying into Bergamo and have considered the city as an option.

Not Venice, love it and have been many times.

    Bergamo? Modena? Somewhere else?

    Thanks

Sirmione is lovely, busy in the day but glorious in the evenings.

Hi @Hbommie I spent a long weekend in Treviso 2 weeks ago, away to watch some rugby but let’s not dwell on that….
It is a beautiful small city, 25 minutes by train from Venice and reachable from both Venice and Treviso airport if you want to use them for your return. It is really quite chilled, nice market pretty old town and the food/drink was superb.
Treviso airport is small and used by Ryanair & Wizz and the local bus takes 12 mins into town for €1.50.

I don’t know if this would fit with your plans but it’s a fabulous experience, don’t spend loads on expensive seats, just get some cheap seats and take some cushions.

We’ve used Treviso airport a few years ago, but would prefer somewhere towards Bergamo. We’ll be popping into Sirmione during the trip, thinking more of a larger place.

Verona is an option but again I’m hoping for somewhere around Como, even considered crossing over the border into St Moritz or Lugano.
The concerts are very tempting and could fit into our stay, thanks.

If you are interested in Cathedrals, Modena may move up your list.

I’ve got to agree with both of Strickers’ suggestions. Verona has much to offer beyond the most obvious tourist attractions. Brescia would be my other suggestion and is closer; the castle and historic centre will easily keep you busy for a couple of days and is great for a bit of random wandering,

Verona plus Garda would be my recommendation (rather than Como)

I find myself agreeing with everything suggested. To put some meat on the bones the trip at the moment is fly into and out of Bergamo, a stay in Menaggio on Como for 3 nights, a gap of 4 nights still to be decided and then on to Lake Garda for 7 nights in the Bella Riva hotel which we’ve been to before and like a lot. The 7 nights is non negotiable as we’ve had this hotel stay cancelled a number of times, and did I say we like it there 🙂.

Double lakes I know, this may slip to City, Dolomites, Garda.

If you’re into museums and cathedral Modena would be great. There’s also a Ferrari tour which is cool! And there are more activities and attractions you can visit or do – https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g187803-Activities-Modena_Province_of_Modena_Emilia_Romagna.html Also, it’s only a 30-min drive to Bologna and approximately 1hr and 30 to Florence which https://gowithguide.com/italy/florence/ are also rich in renaissance art and architecture.

I’ll add two more suggestions – Padua and Bassano del Grappa. Both lovely towns with lots to do.

Bergamo is really nice, but probably a day trip. Citta Alta is really cool and gives a really nice view of the city.

I have been recently to Lentiai for a wedding and loved the location and views. It’s near the dolomites and not too far from Venice. They have “agriturismo” and it’s a very nice experience. Lentiai is just one of the towns in Belluno so there are other options nearby as well. Valdobbiadene is nearby as well if you fancy wineries.

Ortisei is lovely – try the Adler hotel (or Cavallino Bianco with kids).
