Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club NYC for 4 people – 100% increase using Avios for upgrade element

I am pretty au fait with points, but this one is really stumping me.

Cash price for four people flying to New York next April in Economy is £1,900. If I wanted to use my Avios to pay cash for economy but upgrade using points to Premium, the overall cost is 160,000 Avios and almost £4,000 in cash!

I can’t understand how upgrading the cabin using as much as 160,000 Avios costs double the cash element, an additional £2,000, in cash!?

I have been using points, upgrades and all sorts for nearly 10 years now, but this one has stumped me.

My guess is the cheap cash price is in a non upgradable fare bucket so it is helping you out by booking a more expensive economy fare.

    As per BA:

“Most cash bookings can be upgraded with Avios either at the time of booking or later on, depending on availability. Only the lowest economy (World Traveller) fares (Q, O and G) cannot be upgraded with Avios at any time.”

I looked at upgrading an economy avios flight to PE with a Barclays voucher,
and the cash element was indeed more than the cash price of a flight.

Don’t further the APD goes up a large amount when you go from economy to any other cabin long haul. About £520 of the increase is purely down to this.
