Forums Other Destination advice NYC hotels cost

Need to book 3 nights in September and just checked pricing – eye watering to be anywhere central. Looks like my dates coincide with Dua Lipa sold out concerts, UN general assembly and Virgin cruise, to name just a few things that are on 😂
    Any suggestions further out?

Have you looked at the financial district area? Hotels can be cheaper there as people perceive it to be too far away from where the likes of Madison Sq Garden and Times Square are.

Then further afield consider Brooklyn or Hoboken.

But what you will likely save on hotel costs could be eaten up due to extra transport costs (and the extra time as to get to / back from your activities)

Have you looked at points pricing? Can be very economical when money prices high. And then buy the points (assuming you don’t have).

Yes, holiday inn or holiday inn express jersey city $300pn. Doubletree jersey city $500pn. Holiday inn express Brooklyn $400pn…

@SwissJim, unfortunately with dynamic pricing as an example, 60k jersey city, 80k+ manhattan (Hilton). IHG pretty high too and I’d have to buy them…

Try Hyatt points, probably a bonus due soon.

look at hotel mimosa via hotels.com/expedia. Still coming in around £250/night for those dates, in chinatown.

    @Tracy – I’ve just been looking for a conference 7-9 Sept. Jaw-dropping.
I’ll actually be at Rutgers for a day, so could stay in New Brunswick
easily enough, although the comments on the area itself are…quite choice!

@davefl mimosa looks decent and £235 per night for my dates. Another hotel I can find is Aloft Harlem at £180pn with TUI hotels (no idea if they are decent to deal with), hotel seems to get pretty rubbish reviews online though and is $1500 for the 3 nights direct with Marriott 😱

@MichaelC, my dates are 20-23. I really grudge paying £250 plus for a budget hotel lol but beggars can’t be choosers I guess.

Harlem is a long way uptown, but it depends what you’re in the city for whether it’s worth a long subway ride.

I’m seeing 3rd parties undercut the brand’s rates by a good margin like 25% off the candelwood near Penn, but yeah $500 down to $180 seems incredible. I just compared that Tui site against hotels.com and they’re way more expensive for my dates. The whole thing is a lottery of timing vs dynamic pricing.

My date coincides with a cruise arrival and nothing else I can see but also extortion. I went Melia with a voucher. $470 a night all in but we upgraded to a studio with a terrace. Standard rooms were much less than that.

Hyatt is almost always the best way to go in this scenario, even if you have to buy the points – although of course it helps if a promo is on.

That said, Hyatt doesn’t have any really low end properties in NYC (as befits Hyatt) so it you are simply looking for the lowest possible price irrespective of quality it won’t help. If you’re looking for a sold 4-star or 5-star for a fraction of the cash rate on 7-9 Sep it will. Eg Andaz 5th Avenue is 35,000 points or $1,160 per night inc tax for a standard room. Park Hyatt is 45,000 points or $1,850 per night inc tax for a standard room.

@masaccio, that room for my dates is $740pn 😂. I would be able to use 20% off but still nearly $600pn. I’m just wanting someplace half decent, sub £250pn for a couple nights before I jump on a cruise….not even all that bothered about seeing NYC, been there and done that.

What’s wrong with New Brunswick? I think it’s perfectly nice. The usual vagrants and lost souls hanging around the train station but beyond that block it’s fine.

Have you considered Airbnb? Or going hardcore and just partying for 48 hours (no room required…).

That’s good to hear – would also be somewhere new for me, especially as I’m back in NYC a few weeks later. Home2 Suites, it is!

Airbnb is very restricted in NY – both via State and City laws.

One of the most restrictive rules is that the host must be present for stays less than 30 days. So that restricts short term lets.

New Brunswick wouldn’t be good if heading for the cruise terminal. Aloft Harlem or the Mimosa are only 15 mins away, NB is at least 45.

Looks like it’s not an issue for me any more…had to cancel my flights and back to back cruises anyway…
Had started looking at staying in Philadelphia instead, easy access by train and a city I have never visited before….never mind 😭

well ever since the airbnb court decision i think last year in NY the hotels have really had their prices marked up and not alot anyone can do as supply and demand, the year before i had a great value airbnb on the metro line over in brooklyn, after the ruling only places lived in by someone were able to be airbnb listings, so this reduced many of the aparthotel type places on airbnb
