Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club NYC in Economy options – have I missed anything?

  • 343 posts

Hopefully this is a quick question, with a quick answer. I dip in and out when it comes to utilising Avios though, and I may have missed some changes / alternative options that are advantageous, so, it appears I can do…

    1. 55k avios + £100 from LHR to NYC via. BAEC (plus other avios / cash variables) – £35 to cancel
    2. 29k avios + £200 from DUB to NYC via. Avios (plus 8k avios + £51 for Man to Dub) – £70 to cancel (2 x separate bookings)

Any other options / variables / operators I’m missing? (ie. I’m open to EWR if advantageous etc)

55k seems a lot to me.

    Are you time rich?

Have you checked Aer Lingus MAN-JFK?

Thanks for the suggestion – hadn’t considered that

    3. 26k avios + £313.47 from Man to NYC (Aer Lingus) – lowest cash option… (or 4000 avios + £800 😲)

Fairly time rich, but not really wanting to increase cash spend (ie. airport hotels etc)

Is the AA flight DUB-PHL cheaper?

Where are you starting from? And when are you looking to travel? Sounds like MAN from the second option where you add a flight from MAN to DUB.

Remember if you take the BA option from LHR you can add the MAN-LHR sector for free.

What are the other options for more cash and fewer Avios? Sounds like you are booking a peak date.

Have you compared the cost of buying a cash flight? That will give you more of an idea of the value you may be getting.

You can book JetBlue using Avios moved to Qatar although online booking seems screwed.

Tax on the inbound would be only $10, not sure about number of Avios.

Thanks folks, unfortunately the refundable element is key to wanting to use Avios here (so not looked @ AA, or cash flight as don’t think they’re options for me at point of booking.)

Date is not yet 100% confirmed yet – just weighing up my options in advance.

Ideal departure point is BHX / MAN

Good shout about the MAN-LHR sector @AJA – completely neglected that

Will investigate JetBlue – thanks @Rob

MAN-LHR-NYC should be 25k (30k peak) plus £50 each way.

The best hack with this route is that if you use the “stopover” facility you can book yourself into CE on the domestic legs and it’s still free.

Have you looked at booking via Alaska Air on Aer lingus as they have offers on the business class, not sure when you are going but can business class return for $1000 or around £700? Fares fully refundable.

    Thanks for the tip @NorthernLass

Thanks @annabh – cash dictates this will need to be economy unfortunately… but that’s a good deal, thanks for flagging up

Do you have any Virgin points? Some very cheap economy redemptions (from 6,000 points one way) available to NYC depending on the day
