Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Open Jaw 2-4-1 with additional flight?

  • 20 posts

I’ve booked open jaw reward flights to US before using my 2-4-1 voucher but these have typically been into/out of airports served directly from LHR by BA.

My travel plans this time will leave me no where near one of these airports so I will need a positioning flight first however I am conscious if I book this separately should it be delayed/cancelled I have no recourse on my return BA flight.

But I am also not sure booking as part of my reward flight is necessarily the best value/choice as I am limited to the airlines BA works with.

Would you just get the internal US positioning flight as part of the 2-4-1 booking? Or would you/is there a way to book it separately for cash but have it as part of the same itinerary?

    TIA

You cannot mix cash and avios bookings.

Nor can a 2-4-1 be used on AA flights.

If this was me if do the US domestic flight the day before the long haul BA flight.

Wise advice. Most travel insurance will not cover the cost of a missed connection unless sufficient time is allowed in the booking. (My cover insists on 24 hours).

I’m not worried about getting the 2-4-1 benefit for the positioning flight, i’m happy to pay for it or use avios for it or a mix. It was more a question of whether it can be booked at the same time so it’s part of the same itinerary? So it’d be (for example) a 2-4-1 flight LHR > Denver then a cash fare Kansas City > Minneapolis and then the final 2-4-1 leg Minneapolis to LHR?

Suppose doing the positioning flight -1 day would work if I can get the rest of the trip timed right.

The domestic flight couldn’t be on the same booking as the 241 trip.

What I would do is return to the U.K. from somewhere I actually want to visit, so schedule a couple of days there which would have the added benefit of protection from a delay or cancellation.

Is there a list of all US airports served by direct flights from LHR?

    Thanks

    I have…

    SEATTLE / PORTLAND / SAN FRAN / LAX / SAN DIEGO / PHOENIX / DENVER / DALLAS / SAN ANTONIO / HOUSTON / NASHVILLE / ATLANTA / CHICAGO / CINCINNATI / DC / BALTIMORE / NEW YORK (JFK & EWR) / BOSTON

    That all?

It’s not the airports so much as are they served by BA/IB/EI, as this will dictate how you can use the 241.

But if you look on BA.com there is plenty of info about the routes operated.

But you’ve missed a fair few there, e.g., MIA, MSY, LAS, plus I don’t think San Antonio is one.

Sorry, I meant served by BA from LHR.

I thought MIA was served by Gatwick?

The BA site isn’t that helpful (unless I am missing something) as they show all airports you can get to but that seems to include codeshares plus it doesn’t break down between London airports and I am guessing it includes connecting flights too

When you view ‘USA’ destinations on the BA route network page it gives 120 airports…!

The direct routes flown by BA on BA metal from LHR to USA must be far smaller?

    According to Google Flights it’s…

    SEATTLE / PORTLAND / SAN FRAN / LAX / SAN DIEGO / PHOENIX / DENVER / LAS VEGAS / DALLAS / AUSTIN / HOUSTON / NEW ORLEANS / NASHVILLE / ATLANTA / CHICAGO / MIAMI / DC / BALTIMORE / NEW YORK (JFK & EWR) / PHILADELPHIA / BOSTON

Just a straight up confirmed list from BA would be nice though!

If you look on ba.com at the Find our cheapest fares page, and filter on North America, you should get a list of the BA direct flight destinations

Again though, unless I’m missing a trick that shows cheapest flights from London not specifically Heathrow?

Didnt they used to have an interactive map you could click on an airport and see the flights from there?

If you use this, applying a filter for BA, would it give what you need?

I did look at that, as a third party source though I wasn’t 100% sure if I could be sure it was accurate. Same with Google Flights.

This also in ba.com for Heathrow specific destinations

    https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/flights-and-holidays/flights/flights-from-london-heathrow-airport

Again, that shows codeshare and non-direct destinations. There’s no clear list of direct BA metal flights to the USA that I can find.

I’ll just assume the Google Flights/Flight Connections list is right and work from that.

    Thanks all.

It doesn’t need to be just BA metal now, though, you can use the voucher on IB and EI – though admittedly that doesn’t give you much extra choice for destinations!

I think you need to subscribe to flight connections to be able to filter by airline, but I find it such as great tool that it’s worth it.
