Forums Payment cards American Express Outfox the Market direct debit

    Hi all

I realise in hindsight I should have gone with octopus energy, but I’m fixed now for a while and wondered if anyone had had any luck getting them to reduce their direct debit and how.

There doesn’t seem to be an online option and they seem unwilling when asked. I’m now attempting to blindly overpay, hoping they’ll agree to reduce due to level of credit.

    Has anyone had any success?

    Thanks!

Just overpay, make sure you’re in credit, and cancel the direct debit at the bank end. You don’t say who you’re with.

They are with Outfox the Market…

This supplier will increase your tariff if you cancel your DD.

Will they let you move to a flexible direct debit that covers the bill each month? Then just keep your account topped up above your usage level. That’s what I do with E.On and Octopus.

Thanks all. I will phone and ask about a flexible direct debit that covers the bill, I’ve not tried that.

Swiss Jim – are you with OTM too?

No. Only sensible provider is Octopus. Sorry if I missed that piece of crucial information…

Octopus and EDF take our amex pre payment.. (both sensible) They will want to return excess to the card. But at least you can build up card credit if you need to target a bonus. I just make sure there’s always enough credit to cover the bills., or else they try to increase our dd from £5 pm.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I will be switching to Octopus in August at renewal!

Is Octopus cheaper? Being able to adjust your DD and/or pay by Amex is not worth it if it’s more expensive… and if another supplier is significantly cheaper it may be sensible to pay the exit fee (if any)

    @John
Not much in it. Octopus always seem ahead of the game these days.

More than the ‘paying by Amex’ feature, it’s the customer service and transparency that I am happy with at octopus.

Outfox take ad hoc payments with Amex. I’m assuming if your account is in credit they’ll just reduce your DD at some future monthly review point.

To be fair I have just looked at switching to Octopus and I would be almost £200 worse off annually than refixing with OTM… May have to top up and hope…
