Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Overpay NatWest mortgage with Avios Barclaycard

  • 7 posts

I used to overpay my NatWest mortgage with an HSBC Premier credit card to get points. This was fine as it was treated as a purchase rather than a cash advance. I would now like to do the same with an Avios Barclaycard. Has anyone done this before and, if so, did Barclaycard treat it as a purchase or a cash advance?

    Call Barclaycard and ask them?

I think it was @Lady London who noted that that would be the surest way to get them to treat it as a cash-like transaction!

    Hello,

Yes it was me, I went ahead and tried it and it seems to have worked, i made a payment to overpay using my BC avois card and all went through ok. I have jusy recieved my monthly statement which has credited me with theavios points and I have no charges against he card, so so far all seems to be good

It is legit as the blue eagle is generous. If Mr X makes a comeback and writes to regulators, or if the eagle realises it’s losing too much money, it’ll be plugged.

@chrisorr85 what mechanism did you use eg phone, in person, other?

Does NatWest say it accepts credit cards for overpayments?

The reason I ask is that I asked nationwide about this a few weeks ago and got a clear no irrespective of card used (I explicitly asked about Amex and Barclaycard Avios.

    Hi,

I used the natwest website, in the my mortgage portal it offers an overpayment option, when you select that and pick the amount, it’ll offer payment via mastercard/visa, dd etc ( no amex option). Prior to doing this I did phone natwest a couple of times about doing this, the forst person couldn’t answer my question, the second said that it would work but to make sure I paid my card off or I would be libel for the interest. My only issue was they wouldn’t raise my credit limit so I could pay more.

    Thanks @Johnykp, I’ll give it a go.

FWIW I overpay my Scottish power energy bill using the Barclays Avios Mastercard (Amex not accepted) just to keep the monthly DD down and to trouser the Avios.

Paying a mortgage with a CC is not one id considered before and may give it a go (TSB bank however).

    Hi,

I am trying to overpay my NatWest mortgage with the Barclaycard for avios. Barclaycard said it will count as purchase transaction while natwest said it will be a cash transaction.

Has anyone done this recently to advise which one of the 2 it is and whether the avios points were given?

    Thanks
