I have a cruise booked with transfers to MIA Miami International which I understand will drop us off with about 6-8 hours before our flight. We’re flying BA so I don’t think check in will open until about 3 hours before the flight, so we’ll have a chunk of time before we can go airside and use lounges. We’ll have our 10 year old son with us too to entertain.
Does anyone know of any good options for this time, e.g. are their any pre-security lounges, on-site hotels with day rooms etc.?
IIRC there is only one on-site hotel at MIA, no idea if they do day rooms. With 6-8 hours you could easily get a taxi to the beach/shopping mall etc and kill some time before your flight.
There is a day room website dayuse.com
Have a look and see what they are offering price, times ans locations.
A room would be more comfortable as you’d be able to keep your luggage as well as rest / have shower etc
Baggage storage is near door 9 (Communitel), BA Check in desks are near door 6 and one desk is usually open about three and a half hours before departure. (If you were flying American or a BA codeshare on American you could check in at any time).
There are lots of hotels which will have day rooms and can be reached by the shuttles on the departures levels- Hilton site is easiest I’ve found for day use as you put the check in and check out on the same day. (Day use. Available 9am to 4pm only mon-thur standard wifi included/no overnight stays).
Is the transfer from the cruise ship at a set time ?
Could they drop you at an airport hotel or does it have to be at the airport.

It’s a 100% BA flight so will need to wait for their check in desks to open. I’m not sure of the transfer time but I’m guessing we’ll be on our way about 7-8am from the ship so I would expect to be at MIA for around 9am for a 5pm flight. I would imagine the transfer is pretty fixed as I’m sure we’d be travelling with others.
I want to try out the AA Flagship lounge at MIA as we’re travelling Club with BA so will try and check in pretty soon after the desk opens, so around 1.30-2pm, to make the most of this. I’m guessing the reality is we’d have about 3-5 hours to fill pre-security.
Frustratingly the on-site MIA Hotel only advises to call them about day use and has no mention of price. Baggage store and a local Hilton May work – I’ve booked day use rooms in the UK and found the easy to arrange. Just got to work out if it’s worth the hassle over waiting at the airport in a coffee shop/restaurant!

Some cruises offer a day tour on arrival with drop off at MIA, e.g. everglades. Perhaps an option if offered.
8 hours in an airport coffee shop; what a way to end a holiday 🙁
I’d arrange something more fun at all costs.
Hiring a car would be more useful than a hotel day room and is available for £50 or less. It could store your luggage and you could drive it to the beach or anywhere else you fancy…
A Trip Advisor report from February notes two people who got a one day pool pass at the Hilton Blue Lagoon. Was £18 per person & they seemed pleased. There are some websites offering this but i’d probably contact the hotel direct.
I guess the problem you will have is convincing your wife & son to leave early for the airport, as they will likely be happier by the pool (with you buying the drinks) rather than sitting in the AA lounge with AA covering the tab…
