Forums Payment cards American Express Pay Amex with someone else’s debit card

Is it ok to pay off an Amex bill with someone else’s debit card?

The reason I ask is that it allows you to enter card holders name when adding a debit card.

    Thanks!

Amex recently sent out a notification reminding people that it’s against their terms to pay from anywhere other than a bank account in your name.

The app lets you pay by debit card. Am I right though that I can’t pay with my Curve card linked to my Barclays Avios?
    1- they will charge 1.5%
    2- it’s against T&Cs

The name may not be checked (?), but it is passed to the merchant, so not sure how that helps. Amex has got quite sensitive about this – probably regulatory pressure so deliberately breaching the terms that state “You must pay from a personal account in your own name” doesn’t seem a good idea.

Just get them to transfer the money into your account and then you pay Amex

    I agree.

I am not recommending that anyone do this, but I have used my own debit cards to pay my wife’s Amex and vice versa. I don’t remember if I was asked for the name on the card, but I would have put the name of the Amex account holder.

When buying things online (with any card) I type random letters for the name and it hasn’t been a problem for 20 years. Again I am not recommending that anybody do this.

I think you misunderstood me. The name passed to the merchant is the one actually on the card, not whatever you enter in the name box. Amex is OK with taking payments from someone else (eg partner maybe with different name as you suggest) as long as it is agreed with them in advance; their concern is knowing the source of the funds.
