Forums Payment cards American Express Paying Council Tax with Amex – success!

  • 11 posts

Not sure if it’s common knowledge, but couldn’t see anything on here when searching ‘council tax’, but I’ve just paid some of mine via PayPoint which are at Post Offices and many Coop stores. I just showed my council tax bill, they scanned the barcode and I paid the maximum daily amount (£150). It was easy and I just paid with AMEX, it shows as Coop food on Amex bill, so that’s around £2200 chipped away off my target in due course.
Thought it worth a mention in case anyone else finds it useful? I’m in North Yorkshire for info as not sure if this is available nationwide but imagine it is. Hope this helps someone? Cheers!

Well known route to using Amex and has been discussed many times.
Although there is a daily limit on the amount that can be put through the PayPoint machines (my local one that I use is £200), the CoOp store is more than happy to put through multiple swipes to whatever amount I ask them to debit. Just means I can pay larger chunks then wait another few months to do another one.

There’s not much we haven’t sussed out on here – if you google “head for points” plus your topic of interest, previous articles and threads will appear!

Ah cool if people are aware then great, but couldn’t find anything when searching. Probably me as I’m old and not great with technology thanks.

It’s dependent on the area and the paypoint retailer. For example Asda don’t, most co-ops do, my local texaco station does.

If you phrase your google query like this, you’ll find all the old threads on it.

    Hello,

Can you pay any council tax on a PayPoint?

    Thanks,
    Zen

It depends on the council – id suggest contacting them to find out, and if so then find out which if any of your local PayPoints will accept Amex (assuming that’s what you want to pay with).
I had to ask my council to change my payment basis from DD to ‘cash’ and be issued with a payment card before I could go this route.

My local co-op that has Paypoint switched their credit card terminals and no longer take Amex for anything. I was using them for a good year or so before the hammer dropped. Went to a couple of other locals and they switched to the same machines. Hopefully this isn’t a wider rollout with them phasing out Amex acceptance.

For the co-op stores that do still accept Amex I’m meeting increased resistance to taking credit cards for Paypoint at all much less Amex. It might just be the odd staff member in certain locations. I’m still experimenting.

Does anyone have reliable locations for acceptance in Central London or the Weybridge area?

I pay mine at the Coop in New Haw. No issues there (so far).

    @highnal
Do you mean the co op in the parade of shops or the one further over towards addlestone on the right? I tried for years to pay our ctx with amex, always defeated us….

I’ve never bothered with this before as I generally value my time more than the circa £45 worth of points to be earnt from a load of otherwise pointless visits into an unpleasant part of the area.

However, I now have a £10k spend target so if I can knock off £3k of that then I’m happy to revisit this.
So today I drove into the ‘hood and found a Paypoint at a Londis.
They accepted Amex but could only put through £150.
I got them to retry a couple of times to no avail. As there were several local specimens hanging around in the shop with hoodies up, he didn’t want to waste further time with me.

Question: do different types of shops have the ability to put through multiple transactions all the way up to £3k in one visit?
For those here who couldn’t manage multiple payments in one visit, when did it reset? next day? next month?
The guy in the Londis didn’t know, had apparently never seen an Amex in the wild and could barely speak English so was no help with these questions.

@Aston100 I’m in a similar position and tried a Co-op for the first time yesterday. As others have previously reported they had a limit of £200, but actually offered to put through multiple transactions.

At the risk of stereo typing, Londis stores tend to be small individual franchises and may well be owner run. Many local Co-op’s are both slightly larger stores and also part of a larger area group, so likely to be more ‘compatible’ with what is a bit of a niche area. I suggest you see what you have near you.

@Aston100, I find Coops best. I have more than one council tax bill to pay – they each have different limits (seems this is set by the council). But I’ve always managed to pay what I want, by store simply entering back-to-back transactions onto one Coop bill.

And yes, main driver is the spend towards target point, not the additional points in themselves, though always nice to have.

    Thanks guys.
I have located a Co-op that handles council tax via Paypoint.
It is unfortunately within the Birmingham conurbation.
The journey is fraught with danger but shouldn’t be a huge challenge for a powerful adventurer such as I (or at least that’s what I’ll keep telling myself as I make preparations).

My local texaco station certainly can but he hates me for it. They can do lumps of £200 at a time at the paypoint and then process the total transcation amount through the main till. YMMV.

Are you sure you’ve all checked that your councils don’t accept PayPal? I’m feeling the desperation here 😂

I must be missing something !. I pay my council tax with my Barclaycard , still get same number of avios as if I used my Amex and no faffing trying to find a suitable coop pay point.

You’re missing the fact that not everyone has the Avios Barclaycard. I have the cashback one because it’s forex free. Avios collecting is less relevant when you live outside the LHR/LGW catchment area.

That was my thinking right up until I got an Amex plat the other day, complete with a 10k spend target to avail of a 100k SUB.
That sort of number is enough to make me jump on the bandwagon.

This has been available for a while, as others said it will be dependent on retailer.

OneStop maximum is £200 per transaction, so they put my council tax through in two transactions.

I either use my local OneStop or News on the Wharf in Canary Wharf.
I went into News on the Wharf last night, the chap said they no longer accept Council Tax payment on PayPoint. Is this true or was the chap just BSing?

So earlier today I ventured to the co-op in Birmingham.
Fortunately it was too early in the day for the ‘bare mandems’ and the ‘roadmans’ to be up and doing their antisocial thing, so it was an uneventful journey.
The nice old lady at the till was bored and managed to put through 10 payments of £150 each.
Though she did initially express some concern “orrite bab, you ain’t steelin are yah? are yah? nah? sound”.

    So all good.

I think you took a wrong turn and ended up in the Black Country.
