Relatives recently flew MIA-LHR in UC and were instructed to use the Delta Sky Lounge after checking in. They told me that they ordered Sauvignon Blanc at the bar but were advised they would have to pay. They also suggested to me that the available wines were pretty dire. Having travelled in UC for business with VS for many years I am appalled that payment for drinks in the lounge is required.
This is normal practice in US airline lounges. You’ve been spoilt in Virgin’s.
What the american’s call “Well drinks” are free, basic spirits and beers and one or two wines are always free. There is then a menu of cocktails, premium spirits and premium wines that cost extra. You’re expected to tip a buck a drink even on the free ones.
And “dire” wines in lounges = universal phenomenon.

problem solved in Japan! No alcohol or food in JAL domestic lounge at Haneda, quite pathetic tbh.

I have to say tht isn’t the case across the board. We flew back from MIA with BA in J and used the AA Flagship lounge. Self pour drinks, including premium spirits and Champagne were freely available

Flagships are a step up. Admirals clubs arent
Back in the day when I had *A gold status, UA used to give drinks vouchers when you checked into the lounge when flying international. Can’t remember if you were allowed one or two alcoholic beverages. I thought that was cheap but at least it was something!

Not true, there is always beer, perfectly served by an automated machine.
What you don’t have in Japan national flights is food on the lounge (even first) or much on the flight itself (even in business/first).
But that’s because the flight is 1hr tops and fares tend to be very low (as they compete against the train).

Is this really your first time coming across this phenomenon? I mean, if you fly VS that regularly, surely you don’t purely use the eastern routes…

I seem to recall a similar phenomena with BA and some AA clubs like Austin. I think it was only those who were in on an exec card in Y or W were limited to a couple of drinks, but front desk would happily offer more. If you were in J you just flashed your boarding pass. And of course the obligatory $1 tip…

Au contraire, at least in the sapphire lounge and by the way train fares are not cheap and our flight was two hours to Fukuoka
Basic alcoholic drinks – including wine, beer, spirits and cocktails – are free in DL SkyClubs, but there are paid options too.

The automated beer machine was perfectly serviceable when I was in the sapphire lounge at HND recently.

I was Gold for several years but only flew to the US, mainly IAD or LAX

Why can’t people simply believe someone else? There could be multiple reasons such as maintenance or a change in policy why it want there on a morning last week
