Forums Payment cards Other payment cards PayPal Friends and Family payment limit?

  • 12 posts

Has anyone else had a limit placed on their PayPal F and F. I tried to send a payment today and it declined even before getting to the card selection screen. Having played around with it, I’d guess that the limit has been set in dollars, and is $1000, even though it’s a UK account. I’ve previously sent a lot of these payments, so I’m not too surprised, but I’m wondering if it’s a global issue, or just me?

Given that PayPal pays the up to 1.5% card fee and swallows it whole, I can imagine you’re not on their Christmas card list put it that way.

Surprised they’ve only limited your account to be honest!

I’ve always wondered why they’ve never stopped me, I have sent an absolutely obscene amount to myself over the past 3 years, but it’s clear that they’ve had enough of my nonsense now. Also, out of interest, has everyone’s account now got a warning about cash advance fees on the Virgin and IHG Mastercard or is it just flagged accounts like mine?

In the past week, they’ve started coding the transactions on Mastercards on my account as a cash advance and you get 2 warnings about cash advance fees before sending a friends and family payment.

If you are sending obscene amounts to yourself, it’s just you – but likely will have pushed it up paypals action list and will soon be for everyone.

If anyone has experienced issues like this but doesn’t want to talk about it openly, DM me on the same handle on FT.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure Amex have always had it coded in a way that they knew the difference between f and f and purchases. They’ve always been incredibly ruthless in stopping it. I sent one Amex payment in 2019 and PayPal sent me a snarky email and Amex wrote to me, so I’ve never done Amex since. It’s obviously tempting because of the sheer amount of points, but I always valued my relationship with Amex too much to risk it again. From that thread it seems like the OP got unlucky and got the full FR.

I’ve sent the occasional £15 or so when making payments into school birthday money collections and once when sending money to a friend for some beers. Mainly because the Amex was set as the default Paypal payment method. Never had any threats from either party, however given the potential consequences, I certainly wont be risking.

I can’t see Amex or PayPal having an issue with that sort of payment, it’s what the scheme is designed for, but people have sent massive payments that way, that cost PP and Amex a lot and Amex in particular won’t stand for it. PP and other card issuers have been much more relaxed for a very long time.

I’ve just had an email from Paypal informing me that a F&F payment had failed. This was supposed to be taken from a current account. Due to the failure it then took the funds from Amex instead. It’s a couple of payments £60 + £40. I guess I can’t change the funding source of the £60 + £40 now.

The transactions are pending on Amex.

In the past 12 months I’ve done 3 other F&F transaction from Amex – guitar lessons for my son: approx £250 in total. The invoices asked for payment via F&F – which in hindsight perhaps I was foolish to do so. Having read other posts on here about Amex reviews and F&F I won’t be doing anymore.

I’ve now deleted Amex from Paypal to avoid this happening in future.

I presume I need to take this on the chin and accept the risk of it triggering a review.

Relax…You’re unlikely to get a review for such amounts IMO.

    @Bill
I don’t imagine anyone on here can give you a definitive answer (unless Amex employees are lurking, as some of the more paranoid members maintain!). However, what can be said is that you are not quite yet in the same ball-park as @mrtibbs1999 ‘the destroyer’ and more in the category that @FatherOfFour described above. He doesn’t seem to have been reprimanded for the odd small F&F transaction, so you may be OK too…

Even if anyone from Amex were reading, they are hardly going to tell of any limits and, in any event, I don’t believe are any hard/fixed limits. PayPal F&F transactions are just one of various type of transactions that can draw attention to someone’s account where other transactions they also don’t like much will often be found. The most recent reports of closure mention balance transfers as well as PayPal F&F both of which can be indicative of trouble, even if generally fine.

It all comes down to applying common sense and acting reasonably.

Think “Ming the merciless” holds the record until he was busted.
