Discuss today's stories:
Hi, sorry if this is very basic question. Just wondering if the insurance on the platinum card also covers the family of the supplementary card member as well?
I’ve given my dad my supplement and wondering if that means mum is covered as well. The graphic in my dad’s Amex account seems to suggest it DOES but just wanted to quickly run it by the forum before I give them a quick ring to double check.
Many thanks in advance
That’s my understanding – and their under 18 dependants.
A bonus question:
Are supplementary card holders insured if they spending on their own Amex card? Instead of using the supplementary card.
Thanks

It depends on the section of the policy. It’s bonkers to rely on some random response rather than reading the policy for yourself as some responses are inaccurate and/or incomplete.
Hi @JDB,
Apologies about being vague in the question I asked above.
What I was trying to check is my understanding of the definition for “Account” and “Card Account“. Based on the wordings below, so far I have concluded that:
– For any sections in the policy that mention the definitions below, the supplementary cardholders don’t have to pay with the supplmentary card, instead, they can use their own Amex credit/charge cards and would still be covered.
Does that sound about right? The customer service has been advising something different each time I called, therefore, it would be nice to have a sense check on here.
Thanks,
D
Definition from the policy:
“Account” or “Card Account” means Your consumer and small business cards issued by American Express
in the UK, excluding corporate cards and any American Express cards issued by bank partners.”
“You/Your” means the Insured”
“Insured” means (i) Cardmembers and their Families, (ii) Supplementary Cardmembers and their Families
and (iii) grandchildren of the Cardmember or a Supplementary Cardmember who are under the age of 25
and travelling with anyone insured under the Card Account”
“Card” means any Card or other Account access device issued to a Cardmember (or a Supplementary
Cardmember) for the purpose of accessing the Account.”
“Cardmember” means any individual who holds a valid Account.”
@DJ – we’ve been around in circles on this one. In answer to your bonus question:
– @JDB (highly knowledgeable and detail focused) believes not based upon policy wording
– me (random bloke on internet with no legal knowledge) thinks yes
– posters on here have noted successful claims in this situation
– you’d be crazy nuts to rely on it for sums of money you could not afford if the answer was “sorry, not paying”
I should have checked the master thread! Thank you for replying!
