A dreaded EZY flight from the dreaded LGW N…I wish BA flew this route!

Tried to book the Clubroom with Amex/Priority Pass so I can get some work done. No chance. Full. No room at the inn. Go work in the manger.

But I can book direct with nary a problem. American Express? That’ll do nicely, sir, provided we can charge you the full amount.

Perhaos the four annual advance bookings offered by Amex aren’t all they seem.

I’m surprised you think BA Euroflyer are better than easyJet! Not in my experience.

I stopped valuing lounge credits and passes as soon as they introduced virtual queuing, I just say no thanks I’ll go to a pub with a better view anyway, surprising how quickly some of them then let you in.

The whole pay more to reserve a space, no thanks, it defeats the point. Of you get them as a byproduct of something else, great, but it’s not the dealbreaker it once was.

Well, Super Secret Stuff, BA Euroflyer offers Club; Easyjet doesn’t. And I hate self-check in, self-bag tagging, etc.

Ordinarily I’d take your view on the lounge, but I have a ton of work to do and that’s not always easy in a pub.

+1 for Euroflyer. My crew JER-LGW were the best I’ve had in 2024 on BA.

I did think BAEF would be cut to the bone service-wise so travelled last May on Vueling LGW-FCO. Oh my, oh my days. Clearly LCCs are not something I can stomach anymore. From the bellowing of unclear instructions at self-bag drop to the queue skipping all the way along the jetbridge ending up with passengers 5 abreast jostling onto the plane. It was I’m afraid all too much for my delicate disposition.

It’ll be BAEF or full service carriers in J for me from LGW in future.

@BWS, I am with you there. While I’ve had some great EZ and FR trips, since the pandemic there always seems to be someone spoiling for a fight. On our last LCC (MAN-AGP), a man in the row in front of us was threatening to kick off because there was no ice for his JD at 8 am. I was tempted to explain to him that AGP is only 3 hours away, and that they have ice and whisky in Spain, but thought it might only aggravate the situation.

Next FR is from VLC in Feb, we’ll see how that goes!

@NorthernLass I’d de-risk myself by sitting in the aisle seat of row 1; at least only have to worry about those behind and to each side. Though by the time you’ve paid for that and priority boarding, often the difference in price to a full service carrier in J isn’t huge.

When MAN was my home airport, I found LH Group could get me wherever I wanted in a weekend, with a connection in ZRH/FRA/MUC, for £350ish in J. I was disappointed to see equivalent pricing ex-LHR steadily above £500.

Row one is seriously short on overhead space and that can also cause conflict! Also the nearer the front, the more chippy and entitled people seem to be these days. And seem to order about 5 G & Ts each. I think the leg room in FR exit row seats is the best of any carrier and they feel relatively private (though obviously they don’t protect your ears from loud people unhappy with the ice situation).

It’s not at all pleasant returning via LHR though, so direct on an LCC inbound probably wins the day.

Yep, last year travelled on row 2 on easyJet and the bloody bastard in row 1 kicked my kid’s trunki and started shouting at us that the space under his seat was his. I didn’t even reply or looked at him, just pressed the button and the flight attendant was there in half a second (I think she had noted the commotion already). Fortunately my son didn’t even noticed.
The guy’s bag ended up way back there on the plane, what a shame.

Paid the fee and found six people in the supposedly full lounge…which soon fell to four.

It’s not a bad space, to be fair, with attentive table-service and pleasant food. But the carpet needs cleaning, the staff need to stop chatting and and giggling loudly to each other, and dreadful music needs to be hushed. Still, I managed to eat and get some work done.

Altogether, it’s one of the best contract lounges that I’ve used. But the economics can’t possibly stack up – there are more staff here than punters.

If an airline has signed and paid for a contract to ensure that 40 spaces are available for their premium passengers between X and Y times, but in the event 37 of them don’t bother to use that lounge, then the economics will stack up superbly…

If you want the “fake” Club experience on EasyJet, buy a seat up front/exit row, then a musical instrument seat, then some food drink, and maybe a ground lounge:

Will they give the seat to someone else if you don’t have an instrument at boarding?

It’s nice to have a free seat on a row of 3 if me an the missus are travelling .

I was able to use my Amex credits there a number of times last year. Was it quite last minute?

I wonder if they’ll ever launch a club competing product

@jj I do hope you’re going to send the receipt to Amex and explain the situation. Not sure what they will do, but the response will be interesting as regardless there was walk-up space available…

@PeteM, I tried booking with about 24 hours notice, but I also tried a few other random dates and got the same result.

    @Tony
, I’ll expense the visit so I really can’t be bothered to raise a complaint with Amex or Priority Pass – which, no doubt, is exactly the attitude that the lounge would like me to have.

This may be my favourite official information ever:

“To book a seat for your instrument, you’ll need to add a passenger to your booking and add ‘Mr Musical Instrument’ as the passenger name.”

    …and what if it’s a female cello?

In my experience they do not try and cram a passenger in, and you are free to place a bag on the seat subject to some safety rules. I believe you could take a guitar bag full of clothes if you wanted.

After some inbound delay on EasyJet a few years ago, crew timed out and we landed in Italy to pick up new crew. One of the “resting” crew who was returning to Gatwick then took a fancy to my “spare” extra legroom seat. I was forthright in explaining I would not be tolerating that given the seat was already paid for by me. I won out in the end. If you want to be sure, carry a ukulele.

On Indigo it’s a cinch to pay for a double seat, upfront, priority and food in one transaction at the time of booking. Why no European LCC has done this I don’t know.

Similarly, presumably BA could scrap Club short haul, loose the curtain, and offer a bundled economy fare with lounge, up front seat, food, wine and lounge. Without a separate cabin or dedicated seats they’d loose the additional APD tax, wouldn’t they?

Surely an air guitar is even more convenient?

I once found it cheaper to book a seat for ‘Mr Musical Instrument’ than to pay for a hold or cabin bag. I then filled up an old cello case and used that as my case. No weight limit either!
