Hi all!
I’ve tried twice now to apply for the Platnium card during bonus offers. I meet all the criteria, excellent credit score and I’ve been a customer of Amex for over 20 years (never missed a payment) but they don’t seem to want to let me have a Platinum card. Fair enough.
My question is I’ve had a gold card before cancelled it about 6 years ago to continue with my BAPP card. Having applied and been denied for the Platinum today can I try to apply for the gold and still receive the relevant bonus? Or do I now not qualify. Not as good as Platinum but still a nice avios bonus.
No, you won’t be eligible for the Gold bonus as you currently have a personal Amex (BAPP).
You could get an upgrade bonus from Gold to Platinum, but given they have declined you for the Platinum outright, I wouldn’t rely on it.
If you meet the £35k Plat income requirement but have still been rejected, it’s possible there is something else causing Amex not to want to extend further credit, so you could get rejected for Gold. Amex isn’t interested in your credit score, but do you maybe have a particularly large credit limit on your BAPP? If so, and you reduced it, you might have better prospects.

I didn’t think having a BAPP affected the gold or platinum bonuses as they are MR cards.

It’s not what I would deem as super high but I did read the same thing after my last attempt at Platinum and reduced my credit limit on my BAPP down by £5000 in preparation for my next attempt. Same result.

It’s not what you think is “super high” that matters but what Amex think is in relation to your total credit.
If you have other cards they will take those limits into account as well.
Does anyone have any experience with being declined Platnium, approved gold and received the bonus?

If you have any other Amex you won’t receive I’m afraid. Platinum and BAPP are exceptions to the general rule.
@MrsFresh, if you have someone in your household that has a basic ARCC card lying around, this too is potentially upgradable to Platinum via the Platinum link and even gets upgrade points (I say ‘potential’ as Amex may have changed things since I did it a couple of years ago).
I do not know what weird science is behind the ARCC to Platinum upgrade – only that if all is deemed okay with Amex, it works.

I only hold a BAPP. I don’t have any other Amex. I thought having a BAPP did not affect receiving the bonus on a MR card such as gold (or Platinum.)
Affects for Gold, doesn’t affect for Plat.

Thank you. Almost made a rookie mistake there. I don’t really need another card and it was the bonus miles making it attractive.
