My wife is applying for the Platinum card (I have Gold)

If I get a supplementary Platinum card via her, does this make me ineligible for getting the sign up bonus for a Platinum card at a later date?

No, being a supp cardholder is in effect you not being an active Amex customer. You’re still shiny and new for sign up bonuses

Great, so if I’m keeping my Gold, the Platinum supplementary card would be a good idea as she gets the sign up bonus points (5k?) and I use it to book travel/cars in order to get the insurance benefits of Platinum?

Yes 5k (I’ve just received mine for adding wife as supp). Took about two weeks for the link to appear in my online account confirming the bonus MR points – I didn’t want to obtain it too early and not be eligible for some obscure reason.

Yes, make sure you doing add the SUPP during the application process, as I’m pretty sure some have said you don’t get the bonus.
Wait until your wife has rec’d her card, is activated and her online account is set up – then add the SUPP.

    Thanks!

Is there any good reason to keep my Gold card while I have a Platinum Supp (if I transfer my existing points balance to Avios)

@Kraut – it depends on your spending pattern! If you use the Deliveroo offer, buy airline tickets, use gold for any FX transactions and spend enough to trigger the spend bonuses, it’s Amex’s highest earning card and easily pays its keep. Anecdotally, gold gets far more/better offers than Plat which can on their own pay for the fee. You might also get a retention of 10-20k MR. Obviously, if you get rid of gold you can restart the 24 month click for some SUBs, but in recent years Amex has offered upgrades to Plat in line with the SUB.

Thanks, while I do use the Deliveroo offer, I am probably ok to be without the card.

I am just trying to make sure I don’t snooker myself by cancelling gold, getting a Platinum supp from the wife and then trying to sign up for a Platinum card later

@Kraut – if you cancel your Gold now, you won’t be eligible for a Plat SUB for 24 months whereas in keeping it you are likely (but not guaranteed) to be eligible for the SUB sooner via the upgrade route which is routinely at 40k but in recent times has mirrored the new customer SUB promotions up to 80k +. That does obviously mean paying the Gold fee in the interim.

Understood, so if I cancel my Gold card, I have to wait 24 months to get any SUB for Platinum etc if I sign up again. How annoying
