I somehow managed to fall asleep in the lounge at DOH and missed my onward flight. I’ve just paid the fare difference for the next flight but wondering if this is something I can cover with travel insurance or do I need to accept my loss?
I also have HSBC Premier travel insurance if that policy is better than Amex Plat for this particular situation.
Thanks.
Check your policy but likely not, they’ll only cover if you’ve had an insurable event occur, breakdown of public transport, traffic delay etc. Surprised they dinged you though, hopefully wasn’t too much!
A few things that jump out at me, but I’m not an insurance adjuster or lawyer
1) They denied you a “Cancellation”; the FAQ describes that cancellations are subject to Covered Reasons (i.e. you got sick). However, you were already on your trip when your return home was interrupted So I’d call back again and tell them you had a trip interruption. Make sure it’s clear that you live in HK, and also note that “additional transportation expenses” are only covered in economy even if you had booked business for first class originally
2) Honestly, the way I’m reading it, the fact that your trip was interrupted by a travel disruption, which is not a Covered Reason, might mean you’re out of luck. But I’d still re-submit it as an interruption.
What did your booked airline say when your flight home was cancelled, about alternative options, or being rebooked on other carriers?
I’m a little confused. When I look at the travel insurance that comes with my credit card it gives such cover:
Exclusions … “. the cancellation or delay of travel arrangements due to mechanical breakdown of transportation or failure of the carrier to operate the service. This exclusion does not apply to Section D1 “Travel delay” or Section D2 “Missed connection – special events”
It also gives particular assistance if you are traveling to a special event – wedding, funeral etc. If such cover is given free to ANZ Platinum Card holders, surely such cover is readily available elsewhere.
Just also a point of clarification regarding Pre Existing conditions of non traveling persons. The situation in Australia is that the Insured must know of the Pre Existing condition. This point is not well known by most insurers, but is specifically covered by Section 2023 of the Insurance Contracts Act.
