Forums Payment cards American Express Platinum .… where do you get breakdown cover?

  • 8 posts

Now that Nationwide FlexPlus is going up in price, I’m seriously considering Platinum as an alternative. Whilst it’s almost like for like, I see that the platinum card does not offer Breakdown Cover.

Just wondering what people are doing for Breakdown, or whether I’m overthinking this?

    I use Start Rescue

This is as good a place as any, I’ve used the guide a few times for my daughters.

I too use Start Rescue although I never needed them — touch wood.

I chose them after reading about them on Which?.

I don’t think there is really much of an equivalence between the Nationwide Flex Plus and Amex Platinum. The former offers travel insurance that enables you to buy out pre-existing conditions plus age extensions etc. for a modest price but doesn’t offer hire car cover BUT does throw in mobile cover plus AA cover for UK and Europe which essentially covers the entire fee in itself and while the fee has been increased it is the first increase in many years and at £216 seems incredibly modest.

Amex Plat insurance is a very different animal that may suit some but is a bit curate’s egg.

I have a joint account at Nationwide with my wife, and we both received the £100 fairer share payment for the last 2 years, so this has offset the fee. Worth factoring this in.

Nationwide flex account is going up, however Virgin Money still have their M account @ £12.50 a month with better coverage imo as the phone insurance extends to most gadgets, tables, cameras ect. not just your phone.

I’m sure they’ll hike the prices up soon to be inline with NW, considering they are now owned by NW. However even if they match NW’s new fee I’m still paying less a month for Travel Insurance, Breakdown cover, and Phone/camera/gadget cover than I was direct with applecare for just one phone and an ipad. :0 (I get the cover is 100% a downgrade, but I’ve yet to use it over the 4 years I’ve had applecare)

@hw-99 – I agree the Virgin cover is very good, but for the reasons that you cite, plus the general increase in the cost of travel cover, the price will go up. You also aren’t taking into account the NW dividend which, on a joint account, makes the FlexPlus cover almost free. The big shame is that NW has moved from Aviva since UK insurance decided to pull out of that market.

Btw if having a puncture, dont bother with Start Rescue offering to source you a replacement tyre.

After waiting 30 mins they came back with a ridiculous quote for a budget tyre (£250), when I could have used that time towards sourcing a recovery truck. Lesson learnt.

They at first also assumee I had one star cover, not 3 star – so thought I’d have to pay for a tow of to 10 miles+.

    Need to be clued up.

But they did sort me out in the end so I will renew my cover with them.
