I have a conference in Oct. at the Convention Center.
The logistically easy option would clearly be the Hyatt Regency,
but I can get a far better rate at the (well-reviewed) Hampton
Inn – Pearl district, which would also of course have b-fast and
no resort fees! Oh, and a small pool (I’ll be taking my son).

Is the Pearl district a nice enough area? Transport/Uber/walking to
the Convention Center all seem easy enough.

Any tips for Halloween in or around the city also gratefully received!

The Chinatown/old town and and around Union station seem to be the area full of homeless people in tents. Pearl District is supposed to be nice but I’d suggest public transport or uber rather than walk if you’re heading to the convention center. I stayed at the Duniway (a Hilton hotel), which was nice (has a pool too but I didnt use it) and is a block/2 minute walk from Pioneer square. Nice safe area and the Max light rail lines from Pioneer Square will take you to the convention center. There are various hotels round that area to choose from

If you have a day away from the conference and have a car the Evergreen Air and Space Museum is worth a visit if that’s your thing. It’s about an hour from Portland.
