Discuss today's stories:
I am a British Airways Executive Club member and recently signed up to the Qatar Airways Privilege Club to see if I could also leverage the opportunities presented by the ability to move and use my Avios across both schemes.
I was recently looking at booking a long haul redemption for later this year on QTR and had moved 180,000 Avios to the Privilege club in anticipation of this but my travel plans have since changed and will no longer be redeeming these Avios in the immediate future. Now, herein lies my dilemma, or question rather.
My Privilege Club statement shows these as “Received Avios from Partner” and “Valid until: 29 April 2027”. This appears to make sense as I will need to have ongoing QTR activity to extend the expiry date however, my question is, if I move these back to the BA Executive Club, will they now move back with a different expiry from the rest of my Avios already sitting in my BA Executive Club? I have regular Avios-earning activity via my BA travel and BA credit cards so have never had to worry about Avios expiry in my BA Executive Club account before but would be concerned if I now re-introduce a batch of Avios with a fixed expiry date in case they may be seen by BA as being received “from a Partner” and treated differently.
My question, if anybody can advise, is whether my Avios, transferred back to my BA Executive Club account from Qatar Airways Privilege Club, will be treated the same as the pre-existing Avios in the former and the QTR “valid until” date will hopefully then become redundant? I hope somebody here can help!
When did you last earn Avios in BAEC before you transferred them to QR? I don’t think transferring Avios between frequent flier schemes counts as resetting the expiry date.
Also, why move them from QR if you have a definite expiry date on that scheme?
Transferring back to BAEC is instant, so you can transfer if you identify a redemption on BAEC.
Alternatively, transfer them back to BAEc and then transfer MR or NP into BAEC as that would also reset the 36 month clock in BAEC.
I may have misunderstood the avios rules, but they don’t expire unless there’s 2 years of inactivity. This would mean the points are treated as one and have a “theoretical” expiry of ‘today’ + 2 years. The expiry date will be updated each time you credit avios with the current date + 2 years.
In BAEC Avios expire after 3 years of inactivity
