Hi, I am considering booking a business class Avios+tax paying ticket from Hyderabad to Newcastle towards the end of September. However, Qatar doesn’t fly to Newcastle. A nearby airport (Edinburgh/ Manchester), two airports where Qatar flies currently show as 65000 Avios+Taxes 23000 INR (around £230). Obviously, it appears that I will have to call Qatar customer care to discuss my options for Newcastle (with possibly connecting via BA). Did anyone have this experience flying to non-Qatar flying airport on Qatar Avios booking? Do we need to pay more Avios than the ones shown to the nearby airport (Edinurgh 65k)? Any insights please? This is the first time I am trying to use Avios for booking. Thank you.
Do you mean you want to try and fly from EDI to NCL? You would probably need to fly to LHR then back up to NCL which would be a very convoluted way of doing it.
You would need to pay the cash or avios price for this, they might be able to put it on one ticket (for an avios booking) if you book over the phone.
I think the quickest options would be to go by car or train. This would apply equally to MAN; both are about 2 1/2 hours by road from Newcastle.
The easiest air route would be to fly to LHR then connect from there.
Hi, thanks for the update. I am aware that BA generally offers the final leg (on both 241 or Barclays upgrade vouchers) as free if we are connecting to a different UK airport on a long-haul journey. Similarly, since Qatar doesn’t fly to Newcastle, I was hoping that they would provide a free connection, probably from London to NCL. Anyway, I will have to ring them to check on this. Thanks for your kind response, though.
But BA offer a free connection to somewhere they actually fly to. They wouldn’t give a free connection to e.g. Prestwick where they have no presence which is kind of what you are asking Qatar to do.
Also, as pointed out above, even if they said, ok have a free connection on BA, it would require two flights via LHR) from Edi. Even BA wouldn’t offer this on their own Avios bookings.
You can’t use either voucher on QR, as well!
My feeling is that you wouldn’t get a free BA domestic connection on a QR flight, but please let us know what they say.
Worst case scenario is that you’ll need to pay around 5K avios plus £17.50 for an economy award seat LHR-NCL, or a bit more if you need to be in CE.
