Forums Frequent flyer programs Other frequent flyer schemes Qatar or Finnair Business from Seoul

I am looking to book (with my OH) reward seats from Seoul To Edinburgh with either Qatar or Finnair. We have yet to fly Business with either airline. Finnair is slightly cheaper (about £100 p.p.), have a slightly better departure time (2140 as opposed to 0120) and slightly shorter total journey time (18 hours compared to 20 hours). However I am aware from numerous HfP posts that QR business is well thought of and the ICN to DOH leg is (at least currently) shown as QSuite.

    1. Will booking Reward Seats give Lounge Access for both airlines?
    2. For anyone who has flown both AY and QR recently, which would they choose?

Both good options and have flown both on that route but it slightly depends on what you’re looking for in the flight. For me, it’s always work trips so my main priority is departure time and quality of sleep (combination of seat and aircraft type) and I almost never eat on the plane. This could be totally different for a leisure traveller who is looking for the best all round J experience. So for me I almost always fly AY to Seoul, Tokyo and Singapore. Yes the food is superior on QR but when I don’t eat it, I find the bed, aircraft (always an A359) and timings far better. I should also add that connecting is HEL is so easy and very reliable.

End of the day you can’t go wrong with either.

Thanks Seagull that is helpful – think I am heading towards AY. Would you know the answer to my other question ‘Will booking Reward Seats give Lounge Access for both airlines?’

I recently flew back from HND on Finnair. Best flat bed I have ever experienced (better than BA F). Lots of space. Excellent service from the cabin crew. And good espresso. Food perhaps not as good as BA, but adequate for a night flight.

Lounge access was not a problem, and I also got an hour of free Internet on each leg. (This was a redemption.)

I had problems initially reserving seats. Officially, you cannot select seats for free unless you have status, even at OLCI. However, I was able to select seats using Manage My Booking at Royal Jordanian. Could only select middle pairs but that is what we wanted anyway.

The only bad seats on Finnair are the middle pair in the first row, which are very close to the WCs.

We really enjoyed Finnair – far better than BA. No doors on the suites, but they are very private.

One thing to watch out for though is that the lounge at HEL doesn’t open until 06:00. Our flight was due to land at 04:40. Luckily, it didn’t land until 05:20,so by the time we disembarked and cleared security we only had about a 20 minute wait for the lounge to open.

Can’t comment on Qatar. Haven’t flown with them, and would personally avoid them at all costs for purely ethical reasons.

    That’s great.
Can you tell us about other companies you avoid for ethical reasons?

… only by going wildly off topic, which I don’t think is appropriate.
