Qatar Airways Qcredits – how do I use them? – help please

Have been allocated 40 qcredits on reaching gold status

Had not heard of them before so new to me. Been looking around the internet for an easy guide of what they are and how to use them, but I’m still not totally clear.

From what i can gather I can use them to upgrade a flight from UK to DOHA from say economy to businesA? But this is where i confused. I have to take a punt and book economy and only them try and use them to upgrade a class? I certainly don’t want to be left with an economy lang haul flight so on the face of it – seems risky?

How does this differ from using avios to pay/part pay for a business class flight? Do I still use avios as well or instead of?

Would welcome some advice from people who have used them before and how best to do so.

Also would be interested to hear other’s experience with them. Have 100 of them burning a hole in my QR account.

Boy I talked to last time I was passing through the Al Safwa lounge said I should call when I’m booking and the agent will do the upgrade at the time of booking.

Haven’t tried it yet.

Specifically, I’m wondering if there has to be award seat availability (not the 2x award seat, the regular kind).
