Looking at booking am Avios award/redemption flight from the uK to Sydney in Business class in the Autumn.

I thought this would cost 180,000 avios return. This is the amount the QATAR ‘ My calculator’ says, and I’m sure I’ve seen a few articles suggesting this is the price.

Yet, when I go to book, system suggesting 171,000 avios each way required plus small amount of cash.

Obviously doing something wrong? Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Should I give QATAR a ring?

It sounds as though the only award seats left on at least some of the legs are “flexi”, which are charged at double avios by QR. Have a read up on QR redemptions here for more on this. SYD is really popular and you’ve left it relatively late to book award seats.

If there are no standard redemptions available then Qatar will often offer you a double price one.

It’s a popular route of course so be prepared to be flexible on UK starting city, Aussie arrival city and date, and you should be able to find something at 180k.

Edit: beaten to the punch 🤣. Will leave this up as the bit about different cities/dates stands.

Thanks that very helpful. Yes, it seems the options i was ticking were labelled flexi+, which was all that was being displayed under business for the dates i was browsing.

Im quite flexible, so will check some more dates and UK departure airports.

For the UK-DOH leg, you would be fine in economy as it’s under 7 hours – especially if you can get bulkhead or exit row seats. We did DOH-MAN in December and found it as good as PE on BA.
