Forums Payment cards American Express Question about the recent Marriott offers

  • 3 posts

I have the spend 250/300 at Marriott get 100/100 back on two of my cards, but I am a bit confused if prepaid rates are eligible for the qualifying spend:
    1. Offer is marked as “in-store only”
    2. T&C says: “Offer valid on checkout spend only at participating locations”

    A prepay rate is:
    1. Technically online
    2. Not at checkout.

    Can anyone advise?

    Thanks,
    MM

As long as the hotel is on the list, they should track without issue.

Asked several times in Amex/Bonvoy threads – I and others can confirm prepaid bookings work!

Thanks a lot. Amex support thinks differently. Although, to be honest, they said that I may not get the statement, not that I definitely wouldn’t. I’ll just book and see, yolo

Not a prepaid booking but I had a stay in Valencia where the total bill was split to trigger both the offers (250/100, 300/100).

I got the £100 back on both cards a couple of days after leaving 🙂

Prepaid stays with Marriott Bonvoy hotels are processed by the individual hotels, and this will be counted as “in-store” by Amex, because they will not be able to tell.

This also explains why some prepaid stays are not charged before the stay, as each hotel will do their own thing.

As posted on the other threads, just watch the timing of your stay. Marriott hotels often do not actually charge your card until you stay on “prepaid” rates, it just really means the rate is non-cancellable.

As long as your stay is within the offer period this does not matter, of course.

I have previously contacted a hotel to make sure they do charge the card before the offer expired. They may be a bit perplexed by the request, but they will do it if you ask (nicely).

Pre-pay rates usually work fine, although some hotels don’t initially take payment, even on pre-pay rates. When this happens it’s usually possible to call the hotel and ask them to take the payemnt over the phone, although it can sometimes be a bit of a faff getting put through to the correct department.
