Hi, I’ve had an Amex Platinum card for a while, but since Covid I’ve not travelled regularly so no longer get much value from it. I’ve thought of cancelling it a few times, but this time I’m actually going to get the finger out and do so – but before I do, a few questions:
1) I have a rewards points balance. If I apply for and get a gold or blue card, do I just automatically keep those points, or do I somehow need to transfer them over?
2) With a Gold card, I know I don’t get the bonus points for being a new cardholder because I already have another card which earns MR points, but do I get the free first year for new cardholders?
3) My anniversary for holding the account is June. Am I right in thinking that if I cancel now I get a partial refund (‘cos if not I may as well wait until June)?
4) The Harvey Nichols & Dining Credit offers have reset for the new year. Am I as well to use them one last time before cancelling the card, or does the cashback somehow get clawed back if I cancel mid-year?
1) You keep the points
2) You get first year free
3) You are right
4) You are free to use them before cancelling, they won’t be clawed back if you cancel mid-year
I assume there are no negatives in cancelling my Plat and BA PP (wife will apply). So I won’t have any Amex (1st time for 10 years). I will re-apply in 2 years.

Not sure of your circumstances, but you might want to wait and make sure your wife is accepted for the BAPP, prior to cancelling, if you need to have one active BAPP.

Thanks, circumstances are fine with regards Credit, and I’ll cancel BAPP once she is approved. Just curious to see if 10 years AMEX counts for anything?
