Reducing change/cancellation charges

Hello all

Sorry if this is an obvious question but the wording around this confuses me. I’m aware that BA now charge the full £35 cancellation/change charge on avios bookings.

However, if you book with more avios and less cash (in my case 29,000 + £1 vs 20,000 +£35) does the change/cancellation charge get limited to £1 – or would I be charged full £35? And this the same when using a companion voucher?

I’m wanting to secure flights for three ppl but hoping to change to club Europe if availability arises without wasting £35 x 3.
