So, I’ve finally succumbed to booking a trip to Australia next Sep/Oct, bagging a very keen price with Oman Air and Malaysia Airlines (the latter on codeshare with Oman flight number), routing MXP-MCT-KUL-PER-KUL-MCT-LHR. I’ll be BA Gold prior to leaving.
Choosing seats and having the option to add a FF number on Oman Air website was straightforward, although I haven’t added a FF number yet in the hope that they join OW before I depart. But it is impossible to choose seats or add a FF number on the Malaysian site. Yes, I realise it’s a different PNR, which I’ve used…..still nothing doing. Called both airlines to add the details over the phone, but still no joy. Oman rep stated they cannot access the Malaysian booking system (makes sense) and Malaysian rep stated they were locked out of bits of the booking as it’s a codeshare with an Omani flight number. Unless I find a work around, I can only choose my seats for KUL-PER-KUL at check-in….not great but not the end of the world. But, assuming the Oman Air still isn’t a OW partner by next Sep, can I claim my tier points/avios back through BA on a OW partner boarding pass with an Oman codeshare flight number? Any thoughts?

Can’t help with the technicalities of the seat selection but you won’t get Avios or TP on the Oman flights unless they join Oneworld. Nor in theory will you get them for the MH legs as these were marketed by Oman air. You will get them if Oman air join oneworld by the time of your flights. If this is the case, in practice it is then a right pain to get them to credit to BAEC. Oneworld codeshares on MH are difficult enough to get BA to credit. Normally involves a lot of chasing and document submission so retain e-tickets and boarding passes
Thanks for the reply LittleNick.
Aware that claiming anything from Oman hinges on them entering OW, but with BC fares to Perth around £2400, it’s worth a punt, especially as I’m not usually at the dizzy heights of Gold, so can afford to have a soft landing.
I wasn’t aware that claiming back tier/avios from OW members on codeshares was out of scope, so thanks for that.
Avios and Tier Points on codeshares aren’t out of scope, as long as the code and the actual carrier are both Oneworld. It’s just that they don’t credit more frequently, and require more chasing up to get, and more frequently just fail altogether.
Thanks for the reply, Matt. Given the news this morning that Oman Air are joining OW on 30 June 2025, I might have just lucked in and bagged a cheap BC trip to Australia with 840 TPs for under £2.5K.

Yes, let’s just hope there is no further delay.
