Forums Other London life Restaurant ideas near Tower of London

I will be in London on several occasions with Mrs P soon. She is recovering from knee surgery so I am looking for recommendations for a curry house -nothing posh required – near to Doubletree Tower of London. Indian Gourmet (a previous recommendation from HfPers- thanks) at Borough Market is probably too far, don’t really want to taxi it….

Likewise we will be in the Westminster area along with Miss P too and we are looking for a restaurant with vegan options. This could be a pub with food as well.

    Thanks.

There’s the Rajasthan II just off Minories. Certainly used to be very good a few years back. 230m from the back door of the DoubleTree. More recently I ate at the Rajasthan, which is opposite Old Billingsgate about 550m away and was very impressed. Just your standard curry house gig, but well executed.

Rasjasthan has been there forever – I used to go there when we were in the blue building opposite, now home to the Daily Express, in the late 1990s.

Try Tayyabs for something authentic; or the Lahore a little further east. Great value.

Brick Lane is walking distance iirc

Tayyabs is a good call, but it’s quite a yomp down from Aldgate as I remember, so i’d suggest a cab or an uber if you do decide on that given your wife is recovering from knee surgery. Also I seem to recall it’s BYO but there are no supermarkets or off licenses nearby, so go prepared, otherwise it’s a solid 10 mins back to the nearest Tesco.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

I’d be wary of Tayyabs – there’s often quite a queue, which is probably not good for someone recovering from knee surgery. The Empress at the bottom of Leman Street has always been decent, although I haven’t been for a few years.

In my experience, you can skip the queue if you’ve booked.

Tesco is literally around the corner on the same street.

Well, either it’s new, or we were very, very lost…. 😂

Since 2012 at least, but I’m sure you went for a dinner and it was just dark 🙈😂

Re Rajasthan II, we visited last week. The food was nice but the staff very poor. Couldn’t get us in and out quickly enough. Forgot items and were petulant when gently reminded. Thanks to @TheRealSwissTony and @Rob for the details etc.

I’d like to also thank @andrewseftel for his advice on a curry resto in Maidstone, where I also ended up this last weekend. The Shamrat was excellent, food & staff. Couldn’t have asked for more. Thanks a lot.

I was back in Lahore Kebab this weekend. The prices may have nudged up but the portion sizes remain large so still very good value for London and (along with Tayyabs) knocks spots off anything on Brick Lane. It’s not walkable from the DT.

I was given a strong recommendation on this at the weekend: https://gunpowderrestaurants.com/tower-bridge/ which might be closer although you’d need to cross the bridge.
