Forums Other Flight changes and cancellations help Reward flight cancelled within 24th due to Covid

  • 4 posts

    Hi all,

We have a reward flight booked to New York in May.
With the current US entry requirements, we need to take a COVID test within 1 day of travelling.

If we end up testing positive within 24 hours, what happens to our reward flight? Are all the avios and taxes/fees lost with now way to recover them?

    Thanks

Don’t cancel it. Instead claim a voucher which you can do up until check in closes. This will then be refunded back to you in cash/avios after a while

I imagine the test requirement will have been dropped by then anyway

Just a note that for the USA you can schedule the test anytime the day before so unless you had an early morning flight you could give yourselves a few hours buffer on top of 24h.

I called BA And they advised they are no longer giving vouchers out

If you’re that afraid of testing positive, why don’t you “self-isolate” a few days before the departure and do your own test 25 hours before the departure, so you can cancel if you happen to test positive (or use MattB’s suggestion if the flight departure time works for that). Additionally, for the US test, do a remotely supervised and be gentle with the swab if you still worried that you’d start testing positive within the few hours. That should give you enough confidence and options.

What a random phone agent says about anything is as likely to be wrong as right. I honestly wouldn’t stress about what may or may not be in place in May.

Well,to be fair, that is the current situation. If you read the voucher request form, it does say that reward flights will be refunded.

That form has never been very good – it still talks about e-vouchers vs FTVs yet seemingly there is no FTV anymore – cash bookings become e-vouchers, reward bookings get refunded.

So the current advantage of that form, under Book with Confidence, is that you can cancel a reward booking, even within 24hrs of the flight, and that (according to reports) the refund is not subject to the usual £35 fee.
