Rhys’s article on 8 May alluded to RFS being introduced for First in the near future. Would anyone care to speculate when that might happen?
I hope it doesn’t happen. For e.g. a Caribbean route, avios required will be something like 180k each way (based on ratio of PE to CW currently). As it currently stands you can start ex-UK (e.g. DUB) and get F for around 95k avios plus £200 or so for the outbound. Even taking into account a positioning flight it’s a no-brainer.
*Having said that, I don’t know if the choice of “old” options would still apply if RFS was introduced AND you started ex-UK!
@NorthernLass presumably return can be direct to London rather than routing through Dublin?
Just done a quick search – Avios app is showing Reward availability in First London to New York on 15 January 2025.
For 2 passengers, it’s pricing up LHR-JFK as 136,000 Avios plus £1,100.28.
Start the journey in Dublin, flying DUB-LHR-JFK, and it’s 166,000 and £485.36.
@runnerbean, yes, I’m doing DUB-LHR-MEX then MEX-LHR-MAN later this year.
@CJD – you can reduce the avios cost of starting in DUB by selecting economy on the DUB-LHR leg. You have to pay something because it’s not a UK domestic connection. With the 241, I paid 94k avios plus £440 for 2 of us on the outbound to MEX. JFK is in a cheaper zone, so probably 73k-ish avios one-way if you do it the way I suggested.
Are you choosing the stopover option to do that online?
Ah yeah, I’m getting 154,500 for 2 when I select economy from Dublin (so would be 77,250 if using a voucher.)
I made a separate CW booking (no F available) for the return and it cost me 100k avios plus £450 for 2, which made it more expensive than the outbound in F!
Wonder if there is any update on this?
All I know is the low cash fee option of starting in DUB has been killed off when I last looked as BA had upped the surcharge. Hardly worth the small benefit now
If RFS does get introduced, it might open up using the Barclays voucher for First redemptions.
As it stands, using the voucher for First would make no sense on (say) LHR to JFK – you’d pay First surcharges and business Avios, which are something like 24,000 more.

I always assumed this is why you couldn’t use the voucher, but maybe they just also don’t want it to be possible. I suppose we will find out if/when RFS comes to F
