Going to Riyadh next weekend for three nights on a bit of a whim (and a £60 journey from Rome to Riyadh to Stansted).

We’re staying at the AWFAD Hotel in Olaya (apparently the right area to stay, although it’s a very big area!), and from what I can tell it’s 1km or so to get to Tahlia Street which seems to be an area with nightlife – does anyone know of anywhere that we should go?

We’re going to do a city tour and the Edge of the World, but if anyone has any other tips I’d be very grateful….

    Thanks!

Just curious, what sort of nightlife are you anticipating in the Saudi capital?

Diriyah is worth seeing and only a short Uber ride from Riyadh

Aston100 – apparently during Ramadan it’s a bit crazy at night! We’ve been told to sleep during the day and plan to stay out all night, which is not what I was expecting. It seems that there are ‘bars’ – just not selling alcohol.

Gottskalksson – thanks – happily that’s in the City Tour.

Sugary mocktails for a highly diabetic population.
    What could go wrong?

Back- had a great time. Hired a car in the end as we couldn’t find a city tour running and everything seemed so far apart – and with no public transport it made the most sense.

Didn’t get to bed before 4am any night – it was strange being on such late nights out but only drinking tea/milkshakes. There was always something open on Tahlia Street so I’d recommend that to anyone.

Sorry @supergreame you are not selling it to me.

Just back from a 3 day trip to Riyadh. Unlike some of the more virtuous folks who are donating their expiring Virgin vouchers I thought I’d use mine; this time of year doesn’t get many bargains but Riyadh is affordable at £550 rtn taxes fees and charges in J.

Visa £80 for multi-entry, approved in seconds. Immigration and emigration took a minute. Uber worked seamlessly with Airalo e-sim.

Apart from previously mentioned things to do, for those of an avgeek disposition, the Saudi Air Force Museum was excellent. Opening times on the interweb seem unreliable as we turned up at 0830 to a closed gate and a lot of shouting and gesturing between armed guard and Uber driver. The guard made a call, the gate was opened and we were free to roam.

The guard kindly gave us two bottles of water and once inside from the heat outside we attempted to pay the 10SAR pp entry fee to be told ‘no problem you are our guests’ which seemed a common theme amongst the locals during our time.

The Clubhouse and Virgin crew were delightful, with 95% Saudi pax the bar area was just two of us to drink too much, the A330neo seats ok, food average. Air blowers on the plane, aircon everywhere, so despite taking my portable mini fan to daytime 45C temperatures, I didn’t use it at all.

    😊 A very good trip!

I’m thinking Riyadh this winter, I did Jeddah between Christmas and new year last year and really enjoyed it. Did you use the metro? If so how was it? Driving was a bit chaotic in the city, although I did enjoy getting out into the countryside.

Sadly no, we didn’t use the metro, just stuck to Ubers. Would love to go back when a little cooler and get a local to show us around.
