The BA agent added 2 restrictions to it in order to approve the itinerary:
No stopover at DOH – transit only (DOH is in IATA Zone 2 – they tried to prevent a round-the-world trip)
No stopover at KUL – transit only (Deliberate detour – only allowed as no direct option available)
By no stopover did they also force you to take the shortest connection time, or if a 23 hour connection was available would that have been accepted?

When I made that booking, HK office still had a separate fares queue. The agents back then said as long as it is transit it would be ok (i.e. max 23hr59mins). I took the first connection options anyway back then.
However I must say YMMV in booking multi carrier awards – it’s all down to how willing the fares team to accept slightly unusual itineraries.
