I want to overpay my mortgage in a lump sum. Looks like I can do this on my Barclays Avios card – at least I get the Barclays OTP page when I try to use it on Santander.
Does anybody have any experience with this? Will it acrue points? I read it may appear as a cash advance so would earn no points.
If Barclays isn’t an option, is there a nice way to do this and earn something?
Take care. If Santander process it correctly it should go through as a cash advance. So you’ll normally be charged a cash advance fee and interest from the day of the transaction by the card issuer.
Maybe try a test transaction first?

I did a similar test for a V12 finance loan, £5, it has been categorised as FI – merch & services. Contacted barclaycard support via the apple messaging service and they said it is a cash like transaction without giving me full explanation but to cover any possible interests and fees i have paid £6 into the card. This morning i have contacted support over the phone who said that it is not a cash like transaction and in fact I have earned points from it.
Will only find out when the statement is generated though..
I pay my rent and my council tax on the card and I don’t get charged though any fees
Just do a trial with a small and see if you get charged, barclaycard support is so inconsistent!
Good call, thanks. Will try 50 quid and see what happens.
Card gets “declined” when trying test transaction. Presumably because it’s a credit card.
Any other nice ways to pay large amounts and earn points?

if they are treated as cash like transactions then you shouldnt collect avios on it as per t&cs of barclaycard avios ‘You’ll collect Avios on new purchases, but not on balance transfers, money transfers and transactions that make up your cash balance. These include cash withdrawals, wire transfers and buying currency. You won’t collect Avios for any transactions that are later returned or refunded. You also need to keep to the terms and conditions of your account and stay within your credit limit. You can find out more about collecting and spending Avios, including which purchases are eligible.’
