Firstly some background. I cancelled a BAPP card in Sep 23. I recently got an Amex Platinum card and am working towards the £10k spend to trigger the welcome bonus. I have never held a preferred Gold Amex card. I do not want to risk losing Amex membership points that I have earned.
My travel plans mean that I probably value BAPP companion voucher ahead of Amex membership points by a small margin.
I am currently planning to get a BAPP as soon as I hit the 24 month period by which point I will have triggered the Platinum card welcome bonus.
I am trying to decide whether to cancel the Platinum card as soon as I trigger the welcome bonus although I will still want to earn membership points at some point in the future and don’t want to lose the membership points nor be forced to transfer them to airline scheme before then (I’m planning to use them on Singapore or Emirates)
So my questions are:
1) Do I need to continue to hold an Amex card to protect my membership points
2) If so does this need to be a Gold or Platinum or will a BAPP do the job
3) Is there any way to get the Gold bonus before re-applying for the Platinum in the future or will the BAPP mean I need 24 months from cancelling the BAPP before I get the Gold. And that I might as well just reapply for Platinum 24 months after cancelling the current Platinum
I hope this makes sense
You need to hold an MR earning card (there is a free option) to keep your MR points, which would block signup bonuses for Gold or Plat in future.
You can’t get the gold bonus for 24 months after closing any personal Amex card, so Platinum would be your only option. Obviously rules may change in the next 2 years.
Thanks Matt, so if I want to avoid converting MR I’d need to downgrade to Gold? Being an optimist would there potentially be an upgrade bonus back up to Platinum in the future? Or should I just make the decision on MR conversion, cancel, wait 24 months then start again
Just realised there is a Blue MR card which I guess is the free one you meant

Yes, that’s the one if you want to maintain your points for free.
There are occasionally upgrade bonuses from gold to platinum, but not often enough to be relying on.

Funnily enough there is one now.
