I’ve been losing out by not having an Avios earning card when merchants don’t accept Amex, so I’m looking to apply for a Barclays Avios Plus. However, I’m also keen on applying for the Platinum Card for the SUB. Should I just stick to the Barclays Avios application or apply for both and cancel the Platinum when I hit the 75k spend target? As for other relevant cards, I have the BAPP.
The Barclaycard Upgrade voucher is not of great use, especially compared to the BAPP Amex 2-4-1, so paying that fee for the extra 0.5 Avios only may not be a great deal (my spend on my Barclaycard Avios (free one) when Amex is not accepted is probably 3-5% of my UK spend annually). I would only sign up to the Barclaycard Avios Plus if another mega sign up bonus comes along.
For the record I have The Amex Platinum Chargecard, BAPP, Barclaycard Avios and HSBC Premier for my GBP Spend.
I used my first one for Athens CE which was helpful as Athens in the summer is expensive in economy, let alone business. I plan to use the next one on a 1-way CW ticket for two of us on the way back from NYC after a transatlantic cruise.
Compared to my use of the 2-4-1 those are both pretty niche for the kind of flying we normally do.
I still have the free Barclays card, but I also find that I can use Amex most places. Linking it to PayPal has been a route to using it online in places that don’t accept Amex directly.
If you are unlikely to put £20k through the standard card, could consider Curve Metal and use Fronted to get there, but then you have the Metal fees to consider.
For me, it boils down to how often I think I will do redemptions and with my Avios earn rate, one 2-4-1 per year is about right.
@masaccio, you can only use the Barclays voucher on a flight departing from the U.K., so you may need to rethink the NYC plan!
We’ve also used a voucher for Athens to upgrade OH to CE while I’m on a double TP-earning BA holiday – cash fare would have been over £600, as you say.

D’oh! Of course. Regular Avios it is then. I’m one paying one-way CW fares.
