@seemab – I believe that to benefit from the TWOV provisions, you need to depart to a third country, not simply return to the one you arrived from.

You could for example fly London to Hong Kong stop off in Shanghai. Then return direct from Hong Kong. The stop in Shanghai is then in transit.

Yes, Hong Kong-Shanghai-Hong Kong requires a Chinese visa. For transit without visa (TWOV) you could fly Hong Kong-Shanghai-Macao and then back to Hong Kong. Or a similar routing that isn’t a simple round-trip to China.

Having been to both in last 6 months on separate trips be advised that Chinese border staff make you feel like you have done something wrong, and when they say ‘DO NOT CHANGE OR ALTER YOUR FLIGHT’ when TWOV they mean it. There is an arrival card you have to fill in on way in plane, then when you arrive there is a another form at which point they authorise your TWOV max is now 10 days but resets once you exit
My other piece of advice is around the whole TWOV. We flew from Oslo and the check in staff there were not going to let us board because we didnt have a visa, lots of calls their back office staff to check what I was saying was true
