Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Shanghai to Japan, JAL and Cathay

Reading the news on increased Avios requirements this week prompted me to look more into redeeming flights across Asia. Planning a trip to Japan next year, there’s good availability with virgin to Shanghai for the long leg and I’d then look to book the shorter 3 hour leg to Tokyo from Shanghai. BA show good availability with JAL for 60k Avios and £112 tax return for business. Can’t remember the Avios for economy.

However, reading the article suggested booking through Qatar has lower Avios or taxes. However, JAL doesn’t show up in any searches even for the dates that show availability on BA. Searching on AA’s site shows the same points but lower taxes (£30). How do I redeem those flights at the lower taxes as I don’t think I can book AA using Avios unless it’s via BA’s site and hence the higher taxes?

And why am I not seeing any Cathay flights on qatars site to redeem from Shanghai to Japan, is there a way to see which routes they fly? The only results I get for award flights on qatars site is very long indirect flights from Shanghai via Doha for 110k Avios!

Any help appreciated. Dates will be May/June next year and from shanghai specifically.

You can’t see the live availability on their website

The post above includes a helpful link with some good advice for booking with these airlines via Qatar.

I’d further note that Cathay, unlike JAL, doesn’t fly directly between Shanghai and Japan; you’d need to go via HKG. As this adds quite a bit of time and hassle, I’d personally be looking to book JAL flights.

Thanks for the very helpful replies! Will look to book JAL using the request function on Qatar’s site.
