Does anyone have experience of sharing a long-haul business class seat with a baby?
I’m travelling Iberia to MEX on the A350 with my child, who will by then be nine months old; I understand Iberia don’t allow infants over eight months in a bassinet, so we’ll be in the seat together.
Main question is – will there be enough room for us to both be comfortable on the lie flat – I’m not the biggest, nor is he.
Thanks in advance.
It’ll be a little tight, they aren’t the widest of seats. But should be ok. We just did Singapore Airlines (wider seat I think) and I could share with my small 18 month old fine!
I’d still get a bassinet seat though, I think a 9 month old would be fine. The thing I found is their bassinet position isn’t ideal as you can’t see into it when you’re in your seat. But if your baby settles down for a good sleep then is OK
We did it quite a few times with Iberia and it was perfectly fine for us. Better with the older a350, as the new one with doors is a bit narrower. In fact last week we flew for the first time in business with a seat for each of us (my son is now 2.5yo) and he spent most of the time with my OH anyways… we would have been happy paying for one seat less if allowed!
I can’t find much info about bassinets on IB in business – did you manage to get one and, if so, how? Also guessing you have to sit in row 1 by the bulkhead right? Excuse my ignorance but I know the square root of zero about flying with kids.

There is pretty much no info online about them
!All the row 1 seats have the fixings as it sits above the seat, there is a flat surface where your feet go. If you watch some YouTube you’ll see where I mean.
I had read somewhere online about needing to call to reserve one but as it happened we picked a flight where row 1 was occupied so I didn’t bother (especially as calling Iberia rarely results in success for most things 🤣)
The crew were lovely and proactively asked the couple in row 1 if they’d mind swapping with us and then they set up the bassinet for us, so they do carry them onboard without a booking.
We only used it once, but it was located in the last row (maybe it wasnt an a350, not sure as it was 2 years ago), instead of the first one. It was quite annoying for us, since we had to be separated. For the inbound flight we decided to go for the honeymoon seats instead.
But basically if worst comes to worst and we can’t get a bassinet, there should be ample room in the seat for both of us?
Could be a little snug but it’s doable. A lot of this depends on how good and still of a sleeper your kid is.
We did it (in CS) with a two year old phone and I’d say it was fine whilst lying on the side. Kid trying to hide in the foot coffin was more a problem.
We did to India and had two different experiences… on the outbound there were empty seats nearby and the crew made one up as a bed for the baby with extra pillows around for safety. That was really great. On the inbound there were no empty seats and baby slept on my partner as she reclined. We tried with the seat flat but it wouldn’t work unless you’re quite slim and willing to sleep on your side I think
We travelled J with our daughter when she was 18 months old. It works, but there are a few recommendations:
– Get a bassinet even if you do not intend to use it. The extra storage space is handy.
– Look out for a spare seat that you could use if needed.
– Take some masking tape to block out the lights around the seat. They are incredibly distracting to a baby and there are more of them than you realise. Our daughter refused to sleep next to either of us. However, when we vacated the seat, she was more than happy to stretch out and slept like a log.
Quick update – I called Iberia (who, by the way, answered within 25 seconds… shame on you, BA!) and seemed to have successfully reserved a bassinet for both MAD-MEX and back again, which seems like a result. The only thing is, we had previously reserved seats in row 3 and all others are now taken so not sure how this arrangement will work – presumably the bassinet is fixed to the bulkhead in front of row 1?
Any ideas, let me know!

Check the seating plans on aerolopa.com, they’ll have the bassinet location showing.
Just looked – according to their map, there are no infant positions in business class… not sure how this is going to work out for us in that case!

And if there are no infant positions in business class, how would that work with oxygen masks? I’m extremely confused.
I don’t know why aerolopa doesn’t show the positions they’re def at row 1 on an A350. So have your seats been moved to row 1? they can’t be affixed to row 3 (we were actually seated in 3 and the crew asked row 1 to swap with us)
The plot thickens: I called them again, explaining that we had pre-selected row 3 and would we therefore need to be reassigned to row 1, but the agent insisted the bassinet would be stationed in front of row 3. Makes zero sense.
I guess this will be a case of seeing what happens on the day. Oxygen-wise, I presume infants have to be seated in row 1.
