So I’m looking to do a cw redemption in a couple days(Friday), and I have a shortfall of about 7.5k avios.
I just hit my Amex Plat welcome bonus spend limit, but not sure when that will be credited.
The only other option is to buy 8k for £159 or boost my existing 7500 points for £72.
Therefore am I understanding how boosting works, I can 1x my existing 7.5k for another 7.5k points for only £72?
@jarul The balance boost system is very new so we are all learning but it seems to be a rather misleading name – the small print says ‘multiply the Avios you’ve collected, the moment they land in your account or up to 30 days after’.
That means it’s not so much a balance booster as a ‘recently earned part of your balance booster’ (not so catchy I guess, so the marketing bods rejected it).
The booster also seems to ignore any points received in that period via an Avios subscription.
Where that leaves you iro your 7.5k balance depends on if you’ve earned it in the last month or not… At the current time I can only boost the 1,252 Avios I earned from my Sofitel stay back in Dec 22 that belatedly turned up last week !
It would also be cheaper to 3x boost 2.5k Avios than 1x boost 7.5k Avios if you have that option.
All your transactions are displayed for you so that you can pick and chose which ones you want to boost and by how much (1x, 2x, 3x)
The T&C re what’s eligible and what aren’t –
5 Not all transactions are eligible for boosting. Exclusions are balance transfers from other airlines, Nectar exchanges, Avios shared or gifted by other members and previously bought Avios.
Since bought avios are excluded from being boosted it follows that subscriptions will be excluded too
Boost cost per avios are (for the first 300,000 avios)
1x – 0.96 of a penny per avios
2x – 0.94
3x – 0.92

You are not taking into account the 10% boost that is in place for June/July, the 3x boost is actually ~0.84p
That’s from the table on the website.
I had not noticed a table on the website, well spotted.
Thanks all for your response, luckily the Amex Plat bonus points just came in, so I didnt need to buy any more.
@Guernsey Globetrotter, so i transferred 7.5k on tuesday and it allowed me to boost those point, as well as some point I transferred from topcashback on tuesday.
@ClubSmed and @BA Flyer IHG Stayer, thanks, I didnt even think about calculating if the 3x was better value for money, as I also transferred a few smaller batches of avios in ~1k and 500.
Glad it all sorted itself out for you @jarul 🙂 Interesting that the Amex (and Voldeportal) transfer is eligible for boosting – that will be quite a popular option on here methinks!
I never even knew that TCB earnings could be transferred to avios. Every day is a learning day and something I’ll have to look into.

Conversions are at 1p per avios plus 5% bonus however not every cA5hback partner allows you to convert into avios. Hotels.com for example….
