    Hi All,

Not very experienced with this – only our second attempt at booking an avios flight!

Booked our honeymoon outbound flight to Hong Kong 3 weeks ago using an Amex Companion voucher.

Called tonight to book the return leg as it opened up, however whilst the BA website says it should cost 100k in points and £37 in taxes each, the call centre have charged me £575 for the pair of us.

Paid the charge as that’s the flight we need, but really confused as to what the price should be!

Thanks for your help! Don’t do this very often, so just want to make sure we are doing it right!

@bigmansam – the lower price you quote is based on a one way ticket ex Hong Kong as the government there limits fees and charges that can be imposed. When you book as part of a return from the UK, you pay the standard BA RFS of £287.50pp that you have been charged, so it’s correct. The only way around this is to book the return online and reclaim 50% of the Avios and BA doesn’t then recalculate the TFCs.

Yes, it’s the same for Brazil. Those two are the biggest impacts, Japan was historically but is now a relatively small difference. There will often be small (positive) differences (maybe £30-£50pp) for all sort of destinations by booking 2 x one way. In these cases one needs to weigh the positives and negatives of having two bookings vs one.

Difficult one as it’s basically impossible to check before hand as there’s little to no business class availability on other dates to get a full quote online!

I’m just glad we got the flights! 3 weeks travelling around HK, the Philippines and Vietnam – so now need to start planning the rest!
