Forums Payment cards American Express Sign on bonus question

  • 12 posts

    Hello,

So I mistakenly applied to the amex platinum card and was approved today, but then realized my gold account was only closed in October 2023, so less than 24 months ago. I’ve gone ahead to cancel the platinum card, no spending was made on it, it’s still within the 14 days cooling off period.

Now comes November 2025, if I apply for the platinum card then, will I get the joining bonus? Or they will use this blip against me? I asked the agent on chat and he wasn’t able to give me a straight answer.

Unfortunately cancelling an application, even within the cooling-off period, doesn’t negate the fact that you ‘held’ a card for the purposes of bonus eligibility.

I have a feeling that once you’re accepted that re-starts the required 2 year break period regardless of whether you then cancel within the first 14 days. It’s not really a case of using something against you, it’s Amex adhering to its own terms.

Ouch. You will need to keep better personal records if you’re going to play the sign-up bonus game @leeloy88 @Scott and @Northernlass are both correct that the cancellation simply restarts the clock.

It has also been the case (as seen with other posts on the forum) that the date someone closes an account isn’t necessarily the date Amex closes the account, so you may have to leave it until July or conservatively, even August/September 2027 before qualifying for another bonus (all things held constant)

No, supp cards don’t impact eligibility for your own cards/accounts

what about different types of cards, like getting a barclaycard with avios?
Will any bonuses for ‘first’ time card holders be an issue?

Not sure if I understand your question: holding an Amex won’t affect whether you qualify for a Barclaycard if that’s what you’re asking? You’d be advised to read a few of the reference articles on this site related to signups, as these are pretty basic questions.
