A “friend of mine” recently checked his Flying Club account and much to his surprise is now a Silver Member. Other than credit card activity, he has only taken 2 VS flights, both economy and both on redemption.

Without kicking up a fuss, can anyone explain why he is Silver and where he might find out? Or is this just a bug? Any ideas welcome!

The official qualifying criteria to reach Silver relies on the notion of an upgrade cycle, which is calculated as 366 days from the date of joining (one day after the date of joining for a further one year). The first year of Red to Silver requires 400 TPs. Renewing Silver or Silver to Gold relies on a fixed year, from the first date you received Silver for one year (in which you need 400 or 1000 TPs for Silver or Gold, respectively).

Has “your friend” got 400 TPs in the past two years? Redemptions count, as VS lets customers earn TPs on redemptions. Check your friend’s statement. That said, VS is not exactly not au fait with dodgy IT, and it usually works in your friend’s favour…
